5.0 out of 5 stars Primal Visions ( From Brighton !), 27 Aug 2011

Where does Music stop and Art begin? Perhaps right here. Brighton-based
Elizabeth Walling (aka Gazelle Twin) is, by all accounts, an exotic creature
(check out the visuals for 'Changelings' on the World's favourite video site
for a good example of her visionary prowess). 'The Entire City' is a
stunning debut; I'd hazzard to say one of the finest I've heard this year.
This is wonderfully weird stuff! Ms Walling has tapped into something almost
primal with these twelve extraordinary compositions. It's almost impossible
to listen to them without images of dark night skies and black lakes and
a million shuffling and slithering things creeping in behind our eyelids;
a soundtrack to the kind of dreams we wish we had forgotten upon waking.
This is not to say that there is not beauty too but it is a cold, cold beauty!

Jump straight to the quasi-Arabic meditation 'Men As Gods' for a mesmerising
example of her ability to weave magic out of thin air. This is truly the stuff
of alchemy and enchantment! Sinuous harmonies, distant percussion and quivering
synths combine to support a central vocal performance of elemental hypnotic power.
The brooding 'I Am Shell and I Am Bone', in its hushed multi-textured splendour,
also reaches deep inside us to entwine with our very nerve-endings and capillaries.
The effect is unparalleled in the current lexicon of electronic releases.

The aforementioned 'Changelings' comes as close to anything here as a 'true'
song and what a wonderful song it is (Shriekback's 1985 'The Big Hush' came
to mind - check out their seminal album 'Oil & Gold' if you don't know it).

It is to numbers such as 'The Entire City'' and the totally engaging miniature
'Far From Home'' to which we must turn to feel the full imaginative force of
Ms Walling's calamitous cinematic vision. Music to stir both mind and spirit.

Don't just take my word for it (but I hope you will!); Gazelle Twin has delivered
a veritable treasure chest of wonders into the heart of the listening world.

Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me sit up and listen. Magnificent debut. Watch this space., 1 Dec 2011
This review is from: The Entire City (Audio CD)
Let's start by saying I listen to an insane amount of music; I consume it voraciously, and precious little makes it to my 'keeps' list as these ears have become very jaded over the years and it takes something really, really special to make me pay attention. And this is amazingly special.

Gazelle Twin's music is mysterious and captivating, and creates a marvellously enigmatic atmosphere all of its own. She uses her voice fearlessly and with unfettered imagination. The vocals on the track "Changelings", especially, left an indelible impression on me. She cites William Byrd and Meredith Monk as influences... groovy. Also she lives in the same town as me, so with any luck I'll be able to catch some shows sometime soon.

I can't wait to see where she goes from here, and hope that the acclaim and fame which will surely come her way if there's any justice (and there may not be) will not leave her as some gibbering cokehead duetting with Usher at some horrific American music award show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 9 Jan 2012

Absolutely worth purchasing. The ethereal, dark tones of this album send you spiralling into an evocative and mesmerising dream-like trance. The creative creature of this seductive sound gives you permission to drift off into the imagination; it is pure artistic liberation and escapsim. A truly unique sound.

An excellent debut album with a lot to enjoy. I would describe it as Goldfrapp meets Enya via weird! Nice weird, that is. A superb singing voice and a great ear for composition and variety is in evidence. For my taste, though, there were too many instrumental tracks (or perhaps "non-lyrical" is a better description, since there are vocals everywhere but not necessarily words). I've since heard some of the tracks off the new album, Unflesh, and these sound much stronger. "Anti Body", for example, is amazing!

Ms Elizabeth Walling (aka Gazelle Twin) creates a mixture of soundscapes from the jazz influenced opener, the quasi-Arabic 'Men As Gods' to the chant like I am Shell I am Bone. Her lush vocals invade your senses which is backed with dark electronica. Well, worth buying.

I've been waiting years for something like this! I can't believe it's the artist's first album, and am truly impressed. You'll need really good speakers, or headphones, to fully appreciate the stunningly immersive soundscape Gazelle Twin (aka Elizabeth Walling) has created for you. It probably sounds good on cheap speakers too, but with good ones you will be in another world. Walling has one of the most beautiful voices that I have ever heard.
