3.0 out of 5 stars What happened to Olivia
As a big fan of ELO I was looking forward to a collection of hits in chronological order, but why have they replaced the original version of Xanadu which features vocals from Olivia Newton John with a luck lustre version from Jeff Lynne. Please in future include the original hits that we know and love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little bit of everyting, 10 Oct 2011
This review is from: The Essential Electric Light Orchestra (Audio CD)
HOORAY, at last, after years of releasing numerous greatest hits packages Sony BMG have
finally got its act together and released (a complete ELO singles collection in chronological
order) worldwide for the first time. So its time to replace any other ELO singles collection
you may have for this definitive and most comprehensive collection.

The Essential ELO contains ALL the hits and misses(of which they were only a few)from the
bands illustrious career from mainly 1971-1986.

So, you might ask "what am i getting for my money" a little bit of everything. If you like
slow songs there is the gorgeous Telephone Line, Strange magic, Wild West Hero and Dont walk
away. If you prefer a heavier sound and want to rock a little there is Ma-ma-belle, Dont bring
me down and Four little diamonds. If you like a little bit of disco there is Shine a little Love,
All over the world and Last train to London.Maybe you like a little rock and roll then you have
the bands one and only brilliant cover song Roll over Beethoven, Rock N roll is king and the
joyous,uplifting anti-depressant Hold on Tight.

If your taste is for sumptuous orchestral pop then you will know that nobody ever did it better
or ever will again then ELO and it is worth the purchase price alone for the soaring Livin" Thing
and the majestic Mr Blue Sky along with Sweet Talkin" Woman and Turn To Stone.

This collection is really a testamemt to the genius of multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter,
producer/arranger Jeff Lynne who wrote it all bar Roll over Beethoven, and yes he did over produce
at times but there is no denying his ability to write memorable, magical, musical melodies.
The stats dont lie 26 UK Top 40 entries 14 of which were Top 10, 6 Top 20, 21 Billboard Top 40
entries, all of which are included here.

So, buy this collection safe in the knowledge that not only are you getting the best works
from an enigmatic musical genius but you are also getting a fair slice of Pop music history.

Got this today and it's a great album got all the hits on it all in order as well! My only complaint is this Xanadu is a recorded version and not the original with Olivia Newton John.
