I bought this and the Anita o'Day in the same series thinking at a pound a disc even if the remastering is not done well I am hardly missing out. The result is far far better than that. First disc on this set you have Sarah Vaughan with Dizzy and Bird followed by Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown, so the first £2 has already returned two discs that I would have paid the full asking price for. The remastering is good, the albums are all classics, the price is staggering, and I am very happy.

Sassy is one of the great singers and anything she sings is at least worth a listen so just to be clear, the musical content on this set is MOSTLY excellent, the price is great and the sound quality is not disappointing HOWEVER the pack is not necessarily as advertised. The pack is labelled "eight classic albums" however you actually get 6 albums, an EP and half an album. In fairness, Sarah Vaughan Sings Gershwin is a double album so this does limit space however the pack is still inaccurately titled. The music I'd review as follows:

Hot Jazz is an interesting musical venture with Bird and Diz however the result is not altogether as fantastic as it would seem to promise, also it is just an EP
The Divine Sarah Sings is only half an album here which is a shame as the content is excellent, Tenderly is wonderful
Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown is fantastic and a classic, essential stuff
In The Land Of Hi-Fi is a more grand affair than the Clifford Brown album slightly spoiling the broth however the vocals are still great
Sarah Sings Gershwin is exactly what it says on the tin, very similar in theory to the Ella Fitzgerald songbooks
Swingin' Easy is excellent, running close to the Clifford Brown album, perfect example of ways in which Sarah can be both "Sassy" and "Divine" (and even funny as seen on her version of They Can't Take That Away From Me)
Close To You is quite an uninspired album but as ever the vocals are excellent
Sings The Best Of Irving Berlin is a pleasant album with (of course) excellent songwriting however the album is of duets with Billy Eckstine and i find that i spend most of the album wishing it was just Sarah singing.

At the end of the day I've given the set 4 stars because even though you're only really getting 6 albums, you do get the excellent Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown and Swingin' Easy which are far more expensive to buy individually than by buying them in this pack and you also get a swathe of excellent standards from Gershwin, Berlin and others so the pack is still a bargain, just not as advertised

Also, it's well worth checking out Sarah's later albums, especially How Long Has This Been Going On and Crazy And Mixed Up. I personally thing Vaughan's singing got even better with age.

You really get a very wide selection of Sassy's earlier work in this well produced and generous box set. From being "backed" by stellar sidemen(!) of the calibre of Dizzy , Bird and Brownie, to lush and "symphonic" strings, Vaughan sails serenely through her full repertoire. What a voice and what a range! She really puts all other female (and most male) vocalists in the shade. Very few can hold a candle to her in terms of sheer vocal perfection. The play list is , as you would expect for such a healthy package, very varied, and the quality of sound reproduction is more than adequate for the number of original recordings on offer. All in all a very welcome presentation and one heartily recommended for those wanting to familiarise themselves with the work of Sarah Vaughan at a very modest outlay.

The superb timeless quality of Sassy's voice is never in dispute throughout, of course. She didn't care to be grounded in the blues and take off from there, so tended to sound pop and actually then courted pop crossover hits. For me, there's only one sensational album here and that's with Clifford Brown and the small band of fabulous musicians, to which Sassy adds her voice as another instrument, faultlessly (and seemingly effortlessly) played. Still this collection is similarly priced to that one album on its own (does that you tell you something?) so you may as well get the lot.
