5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative uncertainty
Furst is a wonderful novelist within the espionage genre, different in approach to any others I have come across. You could say the plot is labyrinthine except that it could be argued the book is virtually plotless, written from the point of view of the protagonists who, of course, don't know much about what's going on. It's not the case of the writer developing an...

2.0 out of 5 stars Certainly not the great spy novel it was heralded as...
I bought Night Soldiers by Alan Furst because I was looing for a good spy novel and this was up there in various charts and top tens of the best spy novels of all time, along with Graham Greene, Ian Fleming, Len Deighton and John le Carré. I have to say that I was hugely disappointed. On the plus side, it does have some interesting observations about Soviet spy...

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn`t finish this, 10 Oct 2012

This review is from: Night Soldiers (Kindle Edition)
Quite prepared to accept this is due to lack of intellect on my part, but I just couldn`t get through this and that`s unusual. Its been on my kindle for several months. Somebody somewhere compared it to a Le Carre, but I think that is wide of the mark. Maybe its historically accurate but I found it slow, complicated, long winded and almost impenetrable.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absorbing and chilling romp through europen history, 31 Oct 2013
This review is from: Night Soldiers (Paperback)
This was the second book I've read by Alan Furst. I'd started with the 2013 Mission to Paris which I gave just three stars. However for the Night Soldiers the stars are lined up like medals in an NKVD general's chest on May Day.

The book ranges across countries, cultures and time in a gripping tale where treachery is the principal human attribute. Like other fact-ion books I've enjoyed there has clearly been a lot of research by the author to provide period detail to this tale which sparkles with grim authenticity.

Occassionaly the corruption and betrayal can be a bit overwhelming and I don't think the book made me smile once. Except perhaps at the end. Unlike many books and films I've seen recently the ending of this tale is very satisfying. I'll definately download more of his books but perhaps start at the oldest Furst ...

Perhaps this is the best of Furst novels of pre-war and wartime Europe. He depicts the labyrinthine world of agents and spying very realistically and engagingly.

Learn a great deal about European History in the thirties and forties as you read the novel. Twist at he end was a bit predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars An East European spy's guidebook, 9 July 2013

Very enjoyable, very well written. Another quality book from Alan Furst. No shortage of locations and plenty of adventure. One star lost as it isn't an unputdownable book and it fades a bit towards the end

I totally enjoyed this book. It reeled me in from the start and kept me gripped to the very end. Great tension and so many paths the story could have taken. Recommended.

Good book -

but the author should have checked the Spanish bits: loads of spelling and grammar issues there. Still, well worth the reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over complicated and with a too ornate style, 28 Feb 2013

I found it difficult to finish. Over-complicated plot and an ornate and overblown writing style. The plot put a strain on one's patience.
