5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Chopin from Yevgeny Sudbin, 29 May 2012
By
This review is from: Chopin: Fantaisie F Minor, Ballades, Nocturnes, Mazurkas (Audio CD)
Yevgeny Sudbin is one of the great up and coming piano virtuosos of our time. In this recital dedicated entirely to Chopin, Sudbin focuses on the more intimate pieces, such as the nocturnes and mazurkas. His interpretation is fantastic. In the opening Fantaisie Sudbin he communicates chaos followed by utter tranquility, a moment of utter beauty. His playing is deep and profound, but never sentimental. Here is Chopin playing that rivals that of even Artur Rubinstein.

The C minor nocturne op48.1 is like none of the others, and one of the most romantic. Sudbin effectively communicates the catastrophic breakdown of the melodic line after the slow build up, enhancing the feelings of trouble and woe this piece evokes. To follow this, the mazurkas don't fail to disappoint, the playing is lively and stylish. The ballades are also played very eloquently. Listening makes you feel free, but always there is a feeling of desire or yearning there which what makes these pieces so attractive. Also you will be surprised by A la minute, which highlights Sudbin's exceptional inventiveness.

I have been gripped by this recording upon first hearing. I eagerly await future recordings from this incredibly exciting Chopin player.

It is difficult to put into words just how good this recording is. The album is defined by his thoughtful, imaginative and eloquent playing. In my opinion his playing is as close to perfect as it is possible to get. If you are looking for a good purchase do not hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Chopin, 4 Jan 2012
This review is from: Chopin: Fantaisie F Minor, Ballades, Nocturnes, Mazurkas (Audio CD)
This Cd of Chopin preludes, ballades, nocturnes and mazurkhas is absolutely brilliant. the playing is sublime and puts a completely different slant on Chopin. No syrupy over emotive playing here - but just cascading notes as you never heard them before. Listen to the final piece - the famous Minute Walzt- played with such energy and joy!

Having seen Sudbin perform and being totally engaged in his individual viewpoints, I did find these well known pieces perhaps a little too much outside the acceptable
