The `Great Escape' and No Love Lost unashamedly showcased the bands; Paul Weller/ Ray Davis inspired retro mod indie aspirations. Their brand of indie Britpop rock was far superior to their Sheffield counterparts The Enemy

All change the Rifles now comprise of two new recruits following the departure of two founding members who adorned bass and drums.. When core change occur the ripples bound to force other changes to happen, as fresh ideas get put forward and the band's sound and style progresses. This album is filled with fresh ideas, light-hearted melodies and sweet harmonies, but the lyrical ability and emotional expression has been lost along the way. There's less bouncing up and down and shouting and it is not quite so jingly jangly characterized by angular mod riffs

It's instantly apparent that The Rifles have NOT retained the magic that won the band its legion of loyal followers. No more surreptitious youth to manhood anxiety, no more anger or feelings of destitution. The kick in the balls that heavily influenced the first two albums has gone and been replaced with a sound more akin to Revolver, not to far removed from the sound Howie Payne of the Stands was trying to make.

Its sad to say that ultimately, this long awaited third album `Freedom Run' falls woefully short of expectations.

Now you have been told, but at the end of the day you have to be your own judge
