Cheap and Cheerful
on 26 October 2012
I bought this a couple of weeks ago and have just finished watching all of the movies. I am a die hard book fan so am not the biggest fan of the movies but, since the movies have been reviewed to death, I'll just focus on the actual box set here. The version I have is just DVD.
I paid £20.20 for this set that includes all eight of the films. I thought this was pretty cheap and so I wasn't expecting too much - especially considering that the films can be up to £20 each. For this money you are getting a pretty basic box set. It has all eight of the films in four cases - two per case. To be honest I think it is a set that someone has made up with random discs because none of the discs match. The art work on each one is different for example. I'm not too bothered about this because I just wanted the films as cheap as possible, but it doesn't look great if you are buying it as a gift for example.
The other thing that is missing from the set are any extras. On the first three films, there are what they call extras, but it is just a cast and crew list or each and cinema trailer for each. To me these don't constitute extras.
The films all have subtitles for about 30 languages as well.
The all play well - I have seen a couple of reviews that say they have skipped parts and the quality isn't great but both things are absolutely fine on my set.
Overall I would recommend the set if you just want the movies as cheaply as possible, but not if it is for a gift or if you are a big fan of extras - you probably need to spend a bit more than this if the latter are the case.
