I purchased an iPod several months ago, which I use mainly to play music purchased from iTunes who unlike Amazon make it very easy to download multiple tracks in one simple transaction, I play this through a Sony speaker dock which sounds very musical in our bedroom. I have just over 400 tracks downloaded so far which I wanted to be able to play on my Hi-Fi system which I have built up over many years.

My system comprises an Arcam DV137, Marantz CD17 KI Signature (14 years old but built like a tank) powered by six Cyrus amplifiers feeding a pair of B & W 703 speakers via custom built cables. The system sounds great but can be unforgiving of poor recordings.

The obvious choice for me was a Cyrus Streamer, the cheapest being £1,500, or the Marantz NA7004 at £430, I decided not to spend this amount of money as CD is still my main listening source so opted for the Denon DNP720 instead.

It has turned out to be a good buy, being of quite good build and having many features. Apple Airplay and Internet radio being my main interests. I am having to use the WI-FI option as my computer is in the bedroom, the only niggle with this is that no matter what I do the 720 sees my wife's computer as the main connect (much to her amusment as she has no music on it at all). I am able to play a vast array of Internet stations as well now making my FM tuner expendable. The computer needs to be turned on when using Airplay, but of course the iPod can be connected directly to the front panel USB port.

So yes, this is a good bit of kit well worth the lowered asking price (I belief it was originally £430.) It works well, sounds good, but sadly for me I should have spent more money as it is not up to par on sound quality with the rest of my system, (a mismatch) so I shall have to dig deeper in my pockets next time! I expect many people will be more than pleased with it though, as its definitely a value for money, modern player which will suit many systems.

Having bought a Denon amplifier and digital radio some time ago before the idea of streaming music had really taken off I had used a Freecom product to stream music to the Denon amp. While this worked reasonably well it was not reliable despite being connected to a wired network. The new Denon Network Audio Player is an excellent upgrade and I am delighted that it matches my original Denon equipment. Setup was quite straightforward. I use Apples Remote App to play iTunes music stored on my home PC (wired) and AirPlay to stream my smaller music collection directly to the device from my iPhone. I'm no expert but in terms of sound quality I hear my music as well as I think I should.

I have had the DNP-720 for half a year now. Playing WAV or FlAC files, the sound is very good for the price (even slightly better than from my old Denon CD player). Internet Radio and streaming music from my WD MyBookLive Network Storage both work fine and stable (via Ethernet connection). I think the remote is not as bad as some people wright, it does everything I need. The screen is bright and good to read from up to 3m distance.

However, I would not buy the player again for five reasons:

1) I am missing a USB connection for a PC or hard disk at the back of the unit. This is a shame as it would be handy to use the good DAC of the unit in order to listen to music directly from your laptop. The only USB connectivity is at the front. It does not connect to a PC and looks ugly in connection with an external HD cable.
2) The Denon remote app on Android does not work (it works on iPhone though). It simply doesn't recognize and connect to the player. Hundreds of other users are having had the same problem but Denon does nothing about it.
3) The system can only read USB drives with FAT32 file system, but Windows cannot normaly format a drive larger than 32GB with FAT32 (there are ways around this problem on Windows, but it's not straightforward).
4) The front USB connection can only read i-devices, but not Android. The player might be fine for Apple fans (not playing Apple Lossless files though), but not for the overwhelming rest of the world.
5) No Spotify connectivity (I do stream Spotify from my Laptop to the unit using Airfoil/Airplay though. This works fine, but again it's not easy and straightforward)

I buy CDs, and I buy a lot of them. I am a bit hostile towards streaming and downloading and so forth, but having invested in a new Denon amp and CD player I did realize that I am using Spotify and other things quite often (I get Spotify free with my mobile/cellphone subscription). So, I went for it and I bought this device.

Truth be told, I've only had it for two days and I am a bit confused about some features and functions, but I am now able to stream using airplay directly from my iPad and iPhone, and I think it is a lot of fun. Now I just need to buy and download Airfoil and I'll be able to use my laptop in the same manner.

So, all in all, fun fun for a streaming virgin!

Whilst the BBC is trying very hard to persuade everyone to switch to digital radio, we live in a part of the UK which doesn't yet benefit from a reasonable FM signal so we're not expecting to be able to receive DAB any time soon. Hence our purchase of this excellent network audio player which is easy to tune to Internet radio, looks good and sounds great. At last: decent quality radio sound!

A wonderful piece of kit and great value. Easy to set up and the excellent Internet radio facility means that a huge variety of stations from around the world can be enjoyed with superb clarity. It is also a real pleasure to play music from my iPhone wirelessly and once again the reproduction through the Denon player is truly great.

No Denon apps will talk to it. Denon it seems have given up supporting it. But once connected on a Windows network it's really good. Good integration into Windows Media Player. Great sound.
Will not stream with Spotify or any other providers alike. Really came close to sending it back.

just a pity it can not connect wireless with Nokia Symbian phones. Managing audio file with its remote control is frustrating, if you can manage them at all. You need to manage your files with a computer or a smart phone (and an iPhone would cost twice my Denon!).

Everything I expected, great product. Fast delivery and easy to install. Clarity very good, looks cool and picks up radio 6-what could be better!
