Excellent story, mediocre gameplay
on 3 February 2012
I want to start off by saying the platinum edition is worth buying. It's cheap and comes with all the additional DLC for the game. However, I would not say it is worth shelling out the original full price. In this review I'm mainly talking about the core game, the DLC isn't much different anyway.
What's good about Mafia II...
The story. Mafia II follows the adventures of Vito Scalleta and his best friend Joe as they rise up the ranks of the mafia. Vito and Joe are a lot like Tommy and Paulie from the previous game, but I found Vito's narrative more interesting and more involved that Tom's. Mafia is well written and some of the dialogue between Vito and Joe is hilarious. The story takes lots of twists and turns, just don't expect it to stray very far from the italian crime drama genre. *Potential spoiler alert!!!!* One scene in particular where Vito tracks down his sister's abusive husband was practically ripped straight out of The Godfather. *spoiler end!!!* There is even a neat tie-in with the first game. In the end, if you do play Mafia, play it for the story..
Everything else. The gameplay consists of uninspired driving sections, third person shooting galleries and the occasional melee combat segment. You get a garage full of customizable vehicles, but all you can really do is upgrade each car's speed once, as well as making a few cosmetic changes (color/license plate). Any money you get isn't worth saving, since practically every chapter resets your wallet. You generally aren't able to keep any cool weaponry you've purchased past your current chapter either.
On the technical side...
I've only played the PS3 version, but the graphics are solid. I've seen better and I've seen much worse. However, I did enjoy the soundtrack and thought the voice acting was well done.
Overall... Gameplay: average, Story: great, Value: good, (4/5 Stars)
Note: I would've given it a 3.5/5 but Amazon doesn't allow fractions, so I'm being nice and rounding up!
