I want to start off by saying the platinum edition is worth buying. It's cheap and comes with all the additional DLC for the game. However, I would not say it is worth shelling out the original full price. In this review I'm mainly talking about the core game, the DLC isn't much different anyway.

What's good about Mafia II...

The story. Mafia II follows the adventures of Vito Scalleta and his best friend Joe as they rise up the ranks of the mafia. Vito and Joe are a lot like Tommy and Paulie from the previous game, but I found Vito's narrative more interesting and more involved that Tom's. Mafia is well written and some of the dialogue between Vito and Joe is hilarious. The story takes lots of twists and turns, just don't expect it to stray very far from the italian crime drama genre. *Potential spoiler alert!!!!* One scene in particular where Vito tracks down his sister's abusive husband was practically ripped straight out of The Godfather. *spoiler end!!!* There is even a neat tie-in with the first game. In the end, if you do play Mafia, play it for the story..

The bad...

Everything else. The gameplay consists of uninspired driving sections, third person shooting galleries and the occasional melee combat segment. You get a garage full of customizable vehicles, but all you can really do is upgrade each car's speed once, as well as making a few cosmetic changes (color/license plate). Any money you get isn't worth saving, since practically every chapter resets your wallet. You generally aren't able to keep any cool weaponry you've purchased past your current chapter either.

On the technical side...

I've only played the PS3 version, but the graphics are solid. I've seen better and I've seen much worse. However, I did enjoy the soundtrack and thought the voice acting was well done.

Overall... Gameplay: average, Story: great, Value: good, (4/5 Stars)

Note: I would've given it a 3.5/5 but Amazon doesn't allow fractions, so I'm being nice and rounding up!

Movie style gameplay similar to GTA but with realistic purpose. Very well structured, great music and scenery is expertly designed to give you the 1950's New York mafia atmosphere

this game is the directors cut and it has all the download content on the disc, the download content its self if bought off PSN is over £20 so this game is very good value for money, this is not a sandbox game like GTA its a third person shooter with a bit of free roaming, it is good though and the story is also good, I also must say that I do like sonys new platinum range, assassins creed 2 and assassins creed brotherhood are also special editions with all download content included.

This game is not as sandbox as GTA or Saints Row and is very linear, this is not necessarily a bad thing but I got bored very quickly so if you want a sandbox game look elsewhere and if not you may enjoy it but it is far from game of the year material.

Mafia 2. Well what can I say its a great game and this copy comes with pretty much all the DLC appart from made man costume set. but its the only set missing. there are four costume packs and all the playable stories, including Jimmy's vendetta and Betrayal of Jimmy, Joe's Adventures which covers Joe's side of the story. Gameplay wise its a sandbox type game with plenty of cars, weapons and action packed shoot outs. the story is solid and enjoyable and the characters are well played by the voice actors overall I really enjoyed this game if you are into the Mafia type stuff of the period between 40's and 50's then this is for you.

It's similar to GTA game - good plot and story background very well conceived. WOuld recommend to those who like the theme and of course, who have played the former.
