4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a try - it's a hidden gem!
Forget about cult status claims (so many so-called 'cult' movies are rubbish)..

Don't worry about it being set in the "small isolated town with the space monster" theme..

This movie is SO MUCH better than others I've seen that have been raved over - others have obvious plot devices, poor scripting and me shouting at the TV that "They wouldn't do...

3.0 out of 5 stars They're gonna reach out and grab ya!
Grabbers is not too shabby an addition to the creature-feature genre; not brilliant but not bad either.

Erin Island off the coast of Eire is a sleepy wind-swept idyll populated by villagers enjoying a simple, quiet life. That is until the dreaded meteor from another planet descends from the stratosphere to land in the sea unleashing something decidedly malign...

Mind you I am a fan of Richard Coyle.

Well worth watching, it reminded me of Tremors.

I would advise anyone thinking of getting it to do so.

Bought for the fabulous cover image and enjoyed the movie hugely. Set in Ireland it is a super little film with a very amusingly ironic solution to the problem aliens. The characters are well constructed within this funny stereotypical scenario and the romantic thread will appeal to the ladies. Get one in, get a couple of beers in and then curl up on the sofa for this feel good monster flick.

A decent enough film that I will probably watch again at some point. Entertaining so happy enough to have it in the library.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Grab Me, 15 May 2013
This review is from: Grabbers [Blu-ray] [2012] (Blu-ray)
If you are hoping for a film that does for the alien invasion genre what The Guard [Blu-ray] [2011] did for crime movies (that is subvert your expectations and send up movie cliches with a clever and witty script), you'll be disappointed. The plot revolves around an alien menace that's allergic to alcohol, leading our heroes, drunken Garda Ciarán O'Shea, his new partner Lisa Nolan, and the `terribly british' Dr Smith, to organise a lock in at the local pub. But controlling a pub full of drunks is no easy task, especially when you are half cut yourself and a tentacled monstrosity lurks outside...

The CGI is cheap and cheerful, the creature is a tentacled tumbleweed with unconvincing triangular teeth, and the action sequences seem familiar from other movies, especially a not so subtle reference to Aliens.

This is a fine movie to rent with some mates and a few beers, but at the end of the day a good horror comedies either make the scares real and get the humour from the characters reaction, like Shaun of the Dead or Tremors, or they play on your expectations, like Tucker and Dale vs Evil or Cabin in the Woods. In Grabbers the characters wander round too drunk to properly express their feelings, or even tell coherent jokes. Stereotypes are adhered to from the start, the condescending english intellectual, the ambitious young career girl who starts to fall for the alcoholic with the heart of gold... Nothing they do surprises us and there are no surprises from the creature either which ultimately left the film feeling rather flat. One to rent if you are stuck indoors, besieged by tentacled monstrosities.

One funny premisse (getting drunk to keep an alien at distance) isn't enough to save this movie ; even the alien has been done a lot better in other similar movies

4.0 out of 5 stars The Comic Strip Presents: "Five Go Mad in a Horror Film", 17 Feb 2014
This review is from: Grabbers [DVD] [2012] (DVD)
It's a while since I've chuckled this much at a movie.

Take your good old Hammer film set on the usual island off the Scottish or in this case Irish Coast, add "Father Ted" humour-and bad language (sadly), and this is what you get.

An entertaining romp, a good spoof. References as a minimum to "Aliens", perhaps "Lethal Weapon 2" and the "Gremlins" movies, and no doubt lots of others. Even the outtakes are funny for once.

And a good cast, very passable effects- the creature "running" is excellent, and you see more than a few Hollywood blockbusters with way poorer effects- the risible Tom Cruise "War of the Worlds" for one.

Proof that a small budget doesn't mean it all has to be poor- like "Attack the Block" and "Storage 24", for example.

A good ninety minutes' of silly fun.

Yup, very likeable, almost charming, you might say.

(MILD SPOILER !) A friend of mine used to say that sufficient alcohol could protect against radiation poisoning and kept two bottles of whisky in his desk drawer in case of nuclear war; this may encourage you not to take a chance. (END OF SPOILER)

The sort of film that if you didn't like it, you probably knew already.

It's not the worst by far neither is it the best by far but if your looking for an easy to follow movie with decent acting, CGI ( the monster is pretty cool ) and a few laughs then give it a go.
