I was disappointed with this book. There is lots of blurb but found the instructions for the projects to be a bit skimpy. Some of the pictures were so faint that they were very difficult to discrn, yellow drawing on yellow paper is practically invisible. Have viewed dvds by Gary Greene and thought I might gain more by buying this book. I have been using coloured pencils for about a year now, but am at the stage where I need to improve, I hoped this book would aid the process, but most of the projects were too brief and did not provide enough content. There are better books on the market. Probably would suit some one who has greater experience, this is definitely not for the novice.

Whilst a lot of the art books out there deal more with the medium of paint, wonderful pieces can be created with the magic of coloured pencils. Here in this guide by Gary Greene is a titles, which whilst two years in the making, pretty much is the ultimate guide.

Subjects within include materials and tools, reference photo's as well as techniques from layering, under painting alongside burnishing and combining all three different types of pencils.

What perhaps really makes this title stand out is the authors simplistic and easy to understand language as it's written in plain speak English without overly complicating the lessons with fancy art terms. When you back this with a comprehensive DVD that takes you on a step by step guide to painting a rose and this title really does allow the user to make the most of the lessons within. Finally add to this that this whole book is ring bound to help keep the pages that you're working from open at the correct point and you know that it's a title that will help you get the most from this medium. An ideal present for any art minded individual.

I bought this because I am learning to use colour pencils and want to achieve paint like effects with them, I looked at many books and I like this one because it has clear instructions that show you what to do and it helps with trouble shooting problems you may encounter - it was also the only one a found that demonstrated water colour as well as dry pencils and integrates both into pictures - overall a really useful introduction to pencil painting and it has helped me to improve my technic

I have really enjoyed this book: clear explanations, lots of useful information and many demonstrations. The only thing I didn't like was the spiral binding. Normally spiral-bound books are very practical but in this case the system they've chosen is uncomfortable to use.

I haven't finished with this book yet. It is a case of dipping in and out and using it for reference.
