5.0 out of 5 stars Utopianism made simple
This little book is a distillation of years of scholarship by someone who is deeply engaged in this subject area. If you are a new student it provides a revealing introduction and world reference framework. If you are an existing scholar it helps readjust your perspectives. An inspiring short essay by a master. A good place to start.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little bland
I wanted more opinion, more controversy in the content. Instead it presents a very textbook description, the kind of thing you might find on wikipedia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful quick guide to studies on Utopia., 29 Aug 2011
I found this second hand and never regretted buying it. I'm always a bit sceptical about short guides about various topics but this one has got the balance just right, in my opinion, and gives the reader a very good introduction to the field of Utopian studies. Even the seasoned scholar will find it a useful place for various signposts and references.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive and indispensible, 11 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Anyone who thinks of utopia as necessarily being idealistic and impracticable should read this book.

Professor Sargent - a prolific academic author on the subject - introduces the many aspects of utopianism in an accessible but thought-provoking way, and includes helpful signposts to the many other key works on the subject, both supportive and critical.

Overall, an indispensable tool for navigating your way through this complex, contested and often somewhat esoteric field of study.

So, Utopia, then. Are we nearly there yet?
