This review is from: The Decca Sound (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful, wonderful box set of cds. The sound is absolutely extraordinary. Cd's sleeves have original cover art and,
what i thought it was very clever, the back of the sleeve doesn't reproduce the back of the original vinyl lp.

It has, instead, a few lines about the work and a clear,
easily readable list of the tracks and, sometimes, a small reproduction of the original cover of the bonus track.

Bonus track mean that the track was not part of the
original lp and was added when the original vinyl was too short for a cd.

Example: The cd of Ashkenazy playing Rachmaninov's 3rd piano concerto lasts 42 minutes.
Decca, in a nice gesture, added the piano sonata no 2 , which is from another original album but, lasting 25 minutes,
is too short for a single cd.

The booklet is excellent. Lots of photographs, some of them in colour, a complete list of the tracks on the 50 cds and a very informative text about
the history of recording in the last 50 years.

The booklet, by the way, has a nice, readable font size. It is not in the box just for the sake of it. The booklet does add to the box.

If you like classical music, you will love this box set. It is not only a box of cds. It is a real work of art and it is more than worth having it.

Down here I pasted a complete list of the 50 cds that come in the box.

This review is from: The Decca Sound (Audio CD)
I only found out about this wonderful box set by listening to David Mellor, whom I rarely like listening to as he is often patronising and not an expert as, for example, the excellent Rob Cownan on Radio Three. That said, I shall be forever thankful he highlighted this truly astounding box set from Decca.

For value in terms of money it is impossible to beat. Where can you buy CD's at less than £2 a disc? But far more importantly is the range and the sheer quality of the whole production.

I have a fairly extensive range of classical CD's but there were many new composers to enjoy such as Janacek under that expert of Czech music, the late Sir Charles Mackerras, to Berlin cabaret with Ute Lemper. There is something for everyone here - from Renaissance music of the sixteenth century right up to Webern. No-one will like all the music on offer - I really did try to like Messiaen but admit failure! But the majority is from the standard repertoire with a fair mix of orchestral, chamber, instrumental, choral and operatic tracks. The sound quality is from the very good to the jaw-droppingly brilliant. Like a previous reviewer has said, both Ravel discs are probably the best in their class; the Spanish disc (number 2) is wonderfully thrilling, and no-one can deny the historical importance of Britten's War Requiem.

The real pleasure is that I bought this as a Christmas present to me last December. It has not left my desk since: it has brought hours of immense pleasure. My only (very slight) quibble is that there is no Vaughan-Williams and I would like to have seen more Handel performed. Perhaps all the positive reviews here on Amazon might persuade Decca to produce a second box for this Christmas! My order would be placed immediately. My gratitude to all the wonderfully talented musicians and un-sung heroes in the engineering departments for making this such a wonderful collection of great music and ensuring (I hope) that these recordings stay in the catalogue for a considerable time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic recordings, great bargain., 6 Dec 2011

This review is from: The Decca Sound (Audio CD)
These are classic recordings from the early age of stereo in the 1950s, through to modern digital classics. That over-used word 'cornucopia' is usually pulled out to describe box sets like this, but what is on offer is an undeniable abundence of some of the finest Decca recordings of the last fifty years. The sound is of extraordinary quality with analogue recordings often easily mistaken for digital. I'm not clear if these have had a new sound upgrade in reprocessing, but on my relatively standard sound set-up most were, in my view, jaw-dropping. The Monteux disc of Ravel's Daphne and Chloe paired with Elgar's Enigma Variations puts to shame some of the recent versions in audio quality (and performance). Other highlights are the Tchaikovsky string serenade by Marriner (wonderful), Messiaen Turangalila Symphony by Chailly (close but not the equal of the under-rated version by Salonen on Sony), a Sutherland/Pavarotti concert from New York, to name a few of the fifty discs (Lucas has usefully listed the collection on this page). People will have their own likes and dislikes, but if you are relatively new to classical music and hungry enough to explore the enormous creative scope that the classical imagination embraces, this is one of the best 'starter packs' of all time; but equally mouth-watering for more seasoned music fanatics who are offered the pinnacle of performance and sound. Beautifully conceived and presented collection, there is no rival to this in the current catalogue. Go for it now and experience unbridled pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, and Superb sound!, 29 Dec 2011

Not a long review this, because I want to get back to listening to some more of this set. For anyone who remembers the exceptional recording quality of many Decca records, while other companies such as Phillips and DGG trailed in their wake, this box is a must. Thrilling sound, and mostly brilliant performances. One could be churlish about what is included and not, but this is remarkable value for money. Buy it, before it disappears and becomes a collector's piece, like so many of the original vinyls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value and performance, 26 Jan 2012

This box set represents exceptional value. The recordings are astonishing whether age is taken into account or not. Many legendary artists, some discoveries (for me) too. The packaging well executed and well thought-out. Every alternate sleeve has a red or blue trim. So when you're looking into the box to return a disc it's easy to see where it should go in the sequence as soon as you spot two same-colour discs, the one you want to return to its correct position belongs in the middle. I'm not sure if this was planned but it makes life much easier. Every disc contains a generous duration of music. The accompanying booklet contains sufficient information disc by disc to put the recording in context. A long essay adds more information to the general sweep of the recordings. I'm very glad I ordered this.

This very comprehensive retrospective sample collection of stereo recordings made over the last 50 years or so by Decca will show, to the delight of all who purchase this magnificent set of recordings, how much ahead of the art of recording all over the world Decca was, and, managed to remain.

The sheer magnificence of musicianship which arose from astute choices by Decca's A&R staff coupled with a truly outstanding and exceptional standard of recording quality is evident in abundance on each and every CD in this magnificently chosen collection which is surely deserving of a listening by every future music student or audiophile who aspires to appreciate the ultimate in recorded excellence. This is an opportunity to hear something really special at a very low price per CD.

Decca showed the world how to record. To this day. none ever managed to do it better.

This collection is a remarkable anthology of Decca's unique achievement over the decades in combining the talents of internationally recognised musicians with technicians who showed an exceptional ability to reproduce the nuances of a great performance and, in sonic terms, or in every other sense, to ensure that the finished product remained convincing, satisfying, faithful, and extremely exciting to listen to.

Being a Hifi consultant based in Finchfield West Midlands I am always on the look out for recordings to recommend to my customer base.
This Decca set is truly remarkable value offering a musical time machine allowing everyone to enjoy recordings spanning 60 years. On the main system incorporating the Anthony Gallo Reference 5LS Loudspeakers disc after disc leaps into vivid reality.
Performers from the golden age (late fifties and through the sixties) are truly astounding.
A bonus of 10 hours of extras are included and the 200 page booklet is a mine of information.

This set is a must in every collection even if it duplicates some CDs. Every CD I tried produced great sound quality and performance.

The new box sets currently on the market are a great buying opportunity so don't hang about as the production runs will not be indefinite.

I have bought the two Mercury Box Sets and the two RCA box sets of the 1950s and 60s. Theses should also be snapped up.

I have had to return the Decca Analogue Years due to hideously poor quality of recordings. I will re buy though as I want this box. Maybe unlucky here with quality control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blow your mind! Break down those walls! Expand your horizons!, 4 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Decca Sound (Audio CD)
I am still working my way through this box set, a process somewhat slowed by my tendency to play each disc more than once as I proceed.

The other reviews here, which seem very positive, echo my own opinions:
The performances are in well-recorded sound and feature excellent artists and orchestras.
At about £2 a disc, we are saving about £400 on the price of the discs bought individually - if they are all still available to be bought as single discs.

Unless you have a very wide knowledge of classical music, you are pretty certain to find things you have never heard before. We all make our prejudgements about what we are likely to enjoy listening to, and hence we avoid listening to certain pieces or composers. The thing about box sets is that you feel obliged to put aside your prejudices and give the unknown a whirl, as you have, after all, paid for the music already. I, for example, have in the past avoided Benjamin Britten, since all I had previously heard was gloomy extracts of his operas or the odd piece of gloomy brooding music. I could not believe how much I enjoyed the passion and beauty of his Violin Concerto played by Janine Jansen. Surely this is one of the greatest reasons for buying these sets. Is buying the unknown risky? In ye olden days unwitting purchasers bought tiny suckling pigs unseen in pokes (bags) only to find they had been duped into buying a cat - well, letting the cat out of the bag here, you'll feel that you've got a bargain.
