5.0 out of 5 stars Guinness still reigns in the role he defined.
Le Carre requires an expansive approach to translating his tales into film. These two BBC efforts benefit from the several hours devoted to unfolding each of the stories. And very successful efforts they are. Guinness's understated subtlety and that rich, expressive voice capture Smiley to the fingertips (e.g., the occasional displacement behavior of briefly removing...

3.0 out of 5 stars could do with a remaster on BluRay!
I'd personally rate these two 6-part serials as some of the best drama the BBC *ever* produced. The acting and direction is outstanding, BAFTA-winning stuff. Alec Guinness is superb, but there's over a dozen other cast members with hardly a duff performance between them - Beryl Reid for instance is excellent. The stories themselves are great, with complex plots that knit...

Have thoroughly enjoyed watching this original of John LeCarre's film. I have not yet seen the new film but doubt it could be as good as this.

Watched the first series, looking forward to the second. Vaguely remembered
this from the eighties so bought it as part of birthday gift for my husband who enjoys espionage and the like. We have also purchased Smiley's people and are looking forward to the Russia house and Cambridge Spies.Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People Double Pack [DVD]

Despite the merits of the recently released film version this BBC Television series remains the definitive adaptation of Le Carré's classic , just as Alec Guinness will forever be George Smiley

Guinness at his best. And so true to the books. I watched the originals on TV and was glued to the screen; when I received the boxed set it was the same thing again: now I can watch them again whenever I want to.

Slower than modern television thrillers, nevertheless the plot builds brilliantly and always holds the attention. It features a wonderful cast. Top quality drama.

Timeless dramas from that winning combo, Alec Guiness and John Le Carre.

And Beryl Reid - what an actress! They don't make them like this anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars turning off subtitles, try this, seems to work for me, 13 Jan. 2012

Play the movie for a few seconds then go to the main menu. Select the special feature "THE sECRET cENTRE" and let it play a bit then go back to the main menu. Select subtitles and to "OFF" then go back to "PLAY ALL" to restart the movie.

Subtitles are now off. At least for me.

I like the Secret Centre special feature very much.

Slogging through the details of the movie show realistic enough spy work. Not at all like 007 or Indy Jones. Human vanitys are there.

It is delightful to have an old, almost ancient, man take the main part. He seems grumpy enough and should be after getting the sack for reasons that made no sense at the time and make less sense as the movie begins and progresses.

Characters are great. The Russian agent Kirov is so funny. He wears a suit of the worst fitting and has the manners of your nasty inlaw. Grigoroff is hopeless, a fool of a husband which is understandable when you observe his greedy bossy naggy cow of a wife.

How can Karla think he will be safe by surrounding himself with these characters is humorous. The real KGB and Party were too much the same being full of friends and family memmbers.

History plays a part from time to time. The cold war with both reality and lunacy is there.

Haven't seen this series for a long time. Packaging good, content a little dated quality wise but very good for its age! Atmospheric outing for lovers of the genre with sterling performances from all actors.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the three best., 8 Jan. 2012

'Tinker Tailor..' takes you on a journey into the real suspicions and counter spying of the 'cold war' times.
It gives an insight into the strange personalities and personal conflicts that abounded within the British Secret Service and their fellow departments.
It is a complicated but fascinating story that tests your own deductive powers, while keeping up a relentless theme of tension.
It is probably the best spy story and film/DVD ever made, and ranks with the 'Third Man' and 'Reilly Ace of Spies' as one of the 3 best espionage stories ever told.
