3.0 out of 5 stars Maria sings the blues...
I can't say I'm a huge fan of Maria's but this her latest release continues her string of albums during the last 10 years or so which has seen her returning to her 60s blues and gospel roots and her voice has got deeper and more authentic as she's got older. This album doesn't have a particular theme and has a good mix of electric and acoustic tracks, with songs both old...

Maria offers a distinctive voice to some great backing. Well produced and worth listening to over and over. This album is Maria Muldaur at her best, blues and soul orientated. Consider also her album "Heart of Mine" on which she sings Dylan love songs equally well.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Maria's but this her latest release continues her string of albums during the last 10 years or so which has seen her returning to her 60s blues and gospel roots and her voice has got deeper and more authentic as she's got older. This album doesn't have a particular theme and has a good mix of electric and acoustic tracks, with songs both old and new.

Maria produced the album herself with the help of John Porter and it was recorded in New Orleans with a band of local session men including guitarist Shane Theriot, David Torkanowsky on keyboards, bassist Johnny Allen and Kenny Blevins or Shannon Powell on drums.

I found this a bit of a curate's egg - I thought that some tracks worked well, others were just average but I actively disliked the covers of Sugar Pie Desanto's "Soulful dress" and Eric Bibb's "Don't ever let nobody drag your spirit down" which detracted from the excellent original versions. My favourite tracks were Stephen Bruton's "Walk by Faith", Rick Vito's "I Am Not Alone" and the Bobby Charles song "Why Are People Like That". Three and a half stars.
