5.0 out of 5 stars Inspector Zhang and the old-fashioned Way of Investigating...
Recently I have made a very nice, new acquaintance: Detective Inspector Zhang, Singhapora Polis. He is a well-educated, polite gentleman of the old-fashioned kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspector Zhang and the old-fashioned Way of Investigating..., 7 Nov 2012
This review is from: Inspector Zhang And The Falling Woman (a short story) (Kindle Edition)
Recently I have made a very nice, new acquaintance: Detective Inspector Zhang, Singhapora Polis. He is a well-educated, polite gentleman of the old-fashioned kind.
And he resolves his crimes - always a closed-room one - the way that clearly reminds me of Monsieur Poirot - whom he admits to adore ...
Effective, with his female sidekick Sergeant Lee, he strikes when the culprit feels himself yet on the sure side.
And he makes it with the help of 'ze small grey zells'.

This time, returning from the candle-lobster-and-champagne dinner in honour of their 30th anniversary of matrimony Detective Inspector Shang and his beloved wife are the testimonies of a young woman's suicide jump down from the 10th floor of a building.
It seems a open-and-shut case until, yes until the coroner comes with a very but very very big surprise:

Buy it, read it - it's worth that cup of coffee that costs!

In addition there's the beginning of Bangkok Bob and The Missing Mormon - a Bangkok based gumshoe crime I recently read and reviewed, too.

Stephen Leather is THE great Britisch contemporary thriller writer! Before he began to write full-time in 1992, he was for over 10 Years a journalist who wrote for 'The Times, 'The Daily Mail' and the 'South China Morning Post' in Hongkong. He is also valued one of the most acclaimed connaisseurs of the Far East and the author of numerous bestsellers all around the globe.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Singaporean Detective rides again, 10 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Inspector Zhang And The Falling Woman (a short story) (Kindle Edition)
Another in the long list of short story mysteries featuring Inspector Zhang - by prolific mass-market author Stephen Leather (supremely unpopular to many other crime writers since his admission to writing anonymous online reviews of his own books) so I feel ambivalent allowing myself even to read these.
I like the old fashioned style and dry wit of the Inspector and the comic interplay with his wife and his sidekick, the young Sgt Lee. Reminds me of the Charlie Chan stories.
I did guess the perpetrator early on, as I have in many other stories but not the reason for the crime. Still it is perfectly fine for a 20 min sit-down read whilst waiting for plane or train.

Loved the characters in this fast moving exciting story. Inspector Zhang is my kind of detective. He notices everything and misses nothing. Stephen Leather is a master story teller

5.0 out of 5 stars An impossible mystery, 9 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Inspector Zhang And The Falling Woman (a short story) (Kindle Edition)
The conscientious Inspector Zhang has celebrated his thirtieth wedding anniversary by taking his delicate & slim wife out for a meal. A woman appears to commit suicide by jumping from a building and the body lands right in front of the Inspector and his wife after they leave the restaurant.

Murder is rare in Singapore where the Inspector is based but suicide is common. However, there is indeed an impossible mystery for the Inspector to solve.

This is the second Inspector Zhang mystery I've read and I find they are very cleverly written tales - this one is around 16,000 words and the easy gentle style of writing meant I read it in just under an hour.

Priced at less than the cost of the daily newspaper I bought this morning, it held my attention far more and actually gave me a more interesting read than most of the news items!

If you want a quick easy read, then this will certainly keep you entertained.

There is also the bonus of the first few chapters of Bangkok Bob and The Missing Mormon.

4.0 out of 5 stars The case of the drowned jumper, 27 Oct 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Inspector Zhang And The Falling Woman (a short story) (Kindle Edition)
A short story from Leather featuring his Singaporean Detective Zhang solving a mystery in the style of Agatha's Hercule Poirot. In this story Zhang is returning home with his wife as he encounters a suicide jumper falling to the ground nearby. The post-mortem showed that she had drowned, giving a mystery for Zhang to solve. Good stuff.
