4.0 out of 5 stars Eight early albums from the Cannonball in one package, 5 Dec. 2011

This is another Real Gone Jazz value offering: eight classic albums offered on four disks from the great sax player Julian `Cannonball' Adderley. They are all copyright-expired recordings from the 1950s and early 1960s.

Here's what you get on your four disks:

Disk 1
1. Sophisticated Swing (1957)
2. Things are getting Better - with Milt Jackson (1958)

Disk 2
1. Portrait of Cannonball (1958)
2. Sharpshooters (1958)

Disk 3
1. Cannonball Takes Charge (1959)
2. Them Dirty Blues (1960)

Disk 4
1. Cannonball & Coltrane (1959)
2. Cannonball Adderley and the Poll Winners (1960)

Although not an iconoclastic mould-breaker like Trane, Adderley was one of the great jazz saxophonists probably best known for his seminal modal-period sessions with Miles. His most sublime material from this important 1957-60 period was originally released on the album `Somethin' Else' which is not included here: however you do get the essentially comparable `Sharpshooters' and `Them Dirty Blues' where Adderley's fine playing is showcased to great effect.

The sound quality of these recordings is OK, notwithstanding minor criticisms from purists - though whether the `digital re-mastering' really offers any improvement over previous recordings is debatable. This is however a good deal whichever way you look at it; there's plenty of good quality jazz here on offer for not much money and if you get to like Adderley's style, you can always invest in the highest quality recordings later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Four CDs, Eight albums., 8 Jan. 2012

Straight down the line post bop with a touch of populist funkiness. I already have a couple of these albums but couldn't miss this at the price. My 'Sharpshooters' has a track, 'I'll Remember April' that is missing from Disc 2. This set is still recommended as a tremenous bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the very best bop alto sax playing on record, 29 Jun. 2014

Please see my review of the companion set "Seven Classic Albums" by Cannonball. I believe these 15 LP re-creations to contain the very best alto sax bop solos of the '55 - '62 era. If there is a weak spot it is that these 'Real Gone Jazz' sets have little in the way of liner notes (save the personnel/recording dates). But this can be more than adequately compensated for by purchasing the very recent Cannonball Adderley paperback biography "Walk Tall" by Cary Ginell (available from Amazon).

Great value - as are all these sets. We have about ten of these little beauties now, excellent value and a chance to pick up on some tracks that you may have missed as you travel through jazz's many corridors.
