5.0 out of 5 stars A great Jack Reacher origin story
Lee Child must have a thing for small-town America. Maybe it's the sense of isolation he's able to achieve when there are only a few thousand people living in the town? Child's last three "Jack Reacher" novels have taken place in various tiny venues, effectively cut off from civilization except for the highway that runs past it a few miles away. The Affair, Child's latest...

3.0 out of 5 stars More Reacher
Lee Childs latest proffering sees Jack Reacher in 1997 - still in the service of the U.S. Army Military Police. When a murder takes place in the sleepy town of Carters crossing, fingers point straight at Kelham army base. But the soldiers who use & train at Kelham are involved in some high-level secrecy and so the entire investigation has an air of conspiracy around it...

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst yet, 7 Oct 2011

I've slowly but surely worked my way through the whole of the Jack Reacher series and IMHO this is the worst yet. It's supposed to develop further the bit of Jack's character from when he was still in the Army. Well all I can say is the Army is well rid of him. The guy is a homicidal maniac. It's all very well saying that he has a great sense of justice and that he rights wrongs but he also plays at judge jury and, most worryingly, executioner. He also seems to get a big thrill out of beating people up. I found the plot of this book difficult to follow (lots of politics, in-fighting and plain red herrings). There was a huge amount of gratuitous sex described in great cliches (I mean come off it to do it to the rhythm of the midnight train, he might as well have written that he was putting his train in her tunnel!!) And talk about falling between two stools, one of the cops is called Geezer Butler after one of the members of Black Sabbath but most Americans won't remember who they were and most Brits couldn't care. I found this sloppy, cliched, lazy and dense. All in all not one of Lee Child's better efforts.

This should have been the very first book not the 16th...but still very very good, gives a good insight into the reasoning behind why reacher lives the way he does

Not up to Lee Child's usual standard. I actually stopped reading it and read another book in the middle of this one which is the first time I have done that for a Reacher novel.

As Reacher novels go, a bit different but still good. Back in time but still as mean and hard. We'll worth the time.
