This is a good value book, with clear, easy to understand writing - in other words not completely full of postgraduate mumbo jumbo that you NEED a thesis before you can read the book! I am finding it very helpful, with an orderly sense of tasks that need to be completed. Has provoked thinking and that's always a good thing!

Well set out text that was easy to engage with, as it was comprehensive with all the topics you need to get your head around, when contemplating writing a thesis. This student found needed a helping hand getting organized and setting myself a road map for my proposal - thank you.

Rowena Murray's book is excellent! I would recommend every PhD student read it at the beginning of their candidature. Full of REAL advice and tips that I used every day to get me through.

A very practical and inspiring book which had helped me greatly through my doctorate. It has helped me to deal with my fear of writing big projects by offering different strategies.

Brilliant ... Brilliant ... Im so happy that I can now write my EdD... but this book would help any student .. write !!!! and also work through planning/designing and writing from the beginning to the end... Its like a personal tutor -

she helps you write from the beginning of the study and sits by your side day by day explaining what to do ......

Rowena allows you to realise that its not about putting 'perfect' words down ... just get something down and you can sort out the 'academic writing' bit later.... For me this is getting me writing .... and learning ... Thanks you Rowena ....

It is helpful, yes, BUT extremely wordy. Not too good if you just want to skim through it and get started. It seems excellent for thesis in art subjects or if you have plenty of time (months or years) or have just started your PhD. But for science students it might be a bit of a drag especially if you have limited time left after finishing up experiments and data processing. Although the author sticks to the subject throughout the book, its just too wordy and I honestly believe this book could have been 1/4th the size it is. Maybe the author could write a shorter version as well?

Having said all this, the last couple of chapters are very helpful for anyone. In the author's defence, the initial chapters did mention to jump to chapters 7 or 8 if you have limited time. I was looking for a book that would jump straight to step 1, step 2 step 3 and so on and not ramble on for ages on just one point. It could have been more concise and precise in my honest opinion. Overall, I really do like the book...if only I had the time to truly appreciate it!
