I'm new to barefoot running and wanted to take it up as I heard it was less stressful on the knees.

These shoes are ideal for a beginner with some cushioning for your sole. They are lightweight and have a wide toe spread but still supportive.

You do need to do them up tight or else they move around a bit which can be uncomfortable. I use these with thin socks but if you wear them barefoot, I would suggest keeping your toenails trimmed or else you would wear through the uppers.

Word of warning to all beginners at barefoot running, start with very short distances - or else your calves won't know what hit them.

Shoes aren't waterproof at all but dry very quickly. Merrell's website is good for tips and techniques as well.

I would highly recommend these shoes.

I bought these as the price was very keen for a merrell shoe and I have owned merrell shoes in the past and were very happy with them. I agree with the other reviewer that, whilst I like the shoe very much, the non-Vibram part of the sole was wearing away within one (11 mile) run. The hardwearing vibram 'pods' are positioned where the foot lands so soak up most of the damage so theoretically the other areas don't need to be so robust and this is true to a certain extent however, I think in this instance it is just too soft. I will probably buy the road glove as my next shoe and I think the entire sole is vibram so this issue shouldn't arise.

I've been wearing these on and off for a good 6 weeks now. They are amazingly lightweight, and have a good 'barefoot' feel to them. Good breathability, so cool in the heat (I used them for runs while visiting southern Italy). However, the sole is not that rugged. The Vibram part is ok, but the grey part is much sorter and already wearing must more that it should do I think. If treated carefully and just used around town they might be ok, but an rougher terrain or road use will not suit them so well.

Tour of Mont Blanc:- 10 days, 180km, 10000m ascent, 10000 metres descent, all weathers, the majority of walking on reasonably good mountain paths.

I picked these up at a bargain ~£20 a few months ago but never got round to wearing them. Anyway I decided to do a walking holiday a few weeks go and packed these as a comfortable shoe to wear around camp after a hard days hike. I carried all my (not particularly lightweight) camping gear so my pack weight was ~40lb. After day 1 with my trusted walking boots my feet were in blister-hell so I had no alternative but try these Merrells from day 2 on.

In use I found them comfortable and lightweight with very good grip. The only terrain Ihad to move a bit more gingerly on was terrain that was broken with lots of sharp rock edges as these edges pressed through a little to my soft and delicate blistered tootsies. But thats just a case of toughening up the feet rather than a problem with the shoe itself. My feet often got wet as there were many mountains streams/torrents to cross but these shoes don't hold water and dry off so quickly it was never an issue.

Overall:
After a pretty tough walking tour these shoes showed no signs of loss of physical integrity.
Definite 5 stars.

These shoes are great! extremely light weight and vented. It does take some getting use to and my knees feel shot from a weeks worth of running in them - probably because there's not much sole to dampen the impact. Despite that, i bought these shoes for Tough Mudder 2013 and must admit, i will never go back to original trainers. I recommend that you at least try these once, if your serious about training - you wont regret it.

I am in the armed forces and do fitness 5-7 times a week. I have had probably 20 pairs of 'decent' running trainers in the past 10 years, these are by far the best. Light but sturdy, washable, and best of all - they work. They really do feel strange at first but once you get used to them you start really feeling other muscles working, and it feels like you should have been running in these years ago. These are my second pair, not due to quality issues as merrell kit is always top notch, but only due to them being hammered over the past six months - that said I could slip my old ones back on and push out a 10k with no bother (just starting to pong a bit since I went through some murky rivers) - overall beyond 5 stars !!

pros:
+very light ~380g both shoes
+ventilating
+relatively cheap

cons:
-although shoe is almost like sandal (in terms of ventilation) , sole is sweating anyway, but its same like with sandals

I am very happy with the trainers, however after my 1st run, I noticied that the soles were going off. Maybe it's the type of the soles but it shouldn't going that fast.
Other than this the trainers is great.

I got these runners as I have recently taking up doing a lot of walking and I wanted something more comfortable than just bog standard runners which tend to hurt your feet after a long walk. They are very comfortable and I now wear them as my everyday shoe. The only downside to them is that they are very well ventilated so they are not great on wet days and I tend to have to revert back to my other ones. Also a word of warning, if you are thinking of wearing these without socks make sure they are well broken in first, I decided that it would be nice to go out in just the runners one nice day in my first week with them and the mesh back tore the $%!* out of my ankles.
