One small problem...
on 15 March 2012
This has just arrived, so I haven't tested it in the car yet. However, it seems pretty well built, and the suction pad works well on my work desk, so I assume it'll work well on my windscreen too!
The only problem with this (and it's more of a warning actually depending on what you plan to use the device for) is that the clip that holds the phone in obscures the camera. The item does NOT look like the picture on Amazon!
I bought this so I could use an augmented reality driving aid in the car - it relies on using the camera to give various information about traffic, including braking distances etc. Using the holder as it arrives, the camera is partially obscured.
However, it is possible to detach the retaining clip, then slide it back on to the guide in a different position. It doesn't snap firmly into place, but I think it's a good enough interference fit that the phone will be secure.
To be fair to the manufacturers, you wouldn't expect people to be using the camera while driving. So this isn't a criticism of the phone holder, just a warning to potential buyers. I expect all other holders would have the same problem, and at least with this one you can physically move the clip.
(Update: if you do move the clip, then the headphone socket is obscured. So if you also want to use the phone to feed your car stereo, be aware: you can't do both at once!)
