5.0 out of 5 stars Thelonious Monk solo in San Francisco, 1959., 5 Dec 2011

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This overlooked solo piano album from Thelonious Monk was recorded on two October 1959 afternoons at Fugazi Hall in San Francisco. Monk is in ruminative mood on 6 of his own compositions including 2 intriguing new ones, 'Blue Hawk' & 'Round Lights' which he never recorded again. There are also 4 standards with the unlikely inclusion of a 1929 number 'There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie'.
This beautifully recorded album is a fine example of Monk's solo playing and deserves a place in any modern jazz collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funky Thelonius., 10 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You either love or hate Thelonius' style. I love it. It's funky, steely and he's a very gifted jazz pianist. Good reproduction and as asset to any Jazz collection
