By rights, this ought to be great, but in all honesty, it is just a bit lifeless and stodgy for my taste. In the requiem the orchestra is heavy, and the choir sing without any particular charm. This isn't to say that it's a bad performance, and Matthias Goerne makes a very lovely noise, but if I wanted a disc of this music, I'd turn to the recent LSO Live disc with Nigel Short and Tenebrae doing the singing (Faure: Requiem (Tenebrae)).

The rest of the repertoire is all very so-so, really. The Cantique de Jean Racine is pretty, but not worth the price alone. In all, you won't go far wrong with this CD, but you could do a whole lot better.

Sung with French verve and feeling. The cantique is much faster than when performed by an English choir. But the Requiem is sublime

Purchased this for the Cantique but the Requiem is particularly fine and the Elegie and Pavane were an added bonus.

Good price quick delivery etc sounded better on classic FM - dare say they have better kit to broadcast it!! Hey ho! it's still pretty good, but I'm not keen on the counter tenor doing the Pie Jesu - just personal preference!

I bought ths cd because I had been reading a book called Annabelle in which one of the characters loved to sing Cantique de Jean Racine.
This intrigued me so I looked for it online. I love it.
