This review is from: Ravel: Complete Music For Violin And Piano; Lekeu: Violin Sonata (Audio CD)
This is a particularly important recording for the Lekeu, I feel, which isn't otherwise represented on disc in the modern era. Earlier versions by Christian Ferras and Yehudi Menuhin can't really compete in terms of sound, and as another reviewer has said, the tone of Cedric Tiberghien's piano really is amazing - full and sonorous, and realizing the beautiful sound world of Lekeu's writing. And what an amazing work it is - passionate and rhapsodic, with the phrases soaring like a nightingale on a night like no other. Alina Ibragimova has a superb intensity in her sound that is cushioned by the piano's broader tone in a perfect balance. The Ravel is also very fine, allowing us to hear the famous later work straight after his early essay in the form, which I actually think I prefer. For anyone who likes Ravel these imaginative interpretations are required listening, but it is the Lekeu that I find really exciting! The cover painting by Paul Ranson is very lovely also, both in colour and style, and is at one with the Lekeu in its rarity, and the surprise thereof ... it is a disc that has been lovingly produced in every aspect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again a thrilling recording, 9 Nov 2011

This review is from: Ravel: Complete Music For Violin And Piano; Lekeu: Violin Sonata (Audio CD)
Once again a thrilling recording from Alina Ibragimova and , Cédric Tiberghien.
I bought this CD on the strength of their recordings of the Beethoven sonatas - Beethoven: Violin SonatasBeethoven: Violin Sonatas Vol.3 (Ibragimova/Tiberghien)Beethoven Violin Sonatas Vol. 2 (Alina Ibragimova / Cedric Tiberghien) - and have been thoroughly delighted by music that I would possibly not otherwise have come across.
Reviews of the pair tend to highlight the violin playing (I suppose that goes with the territory in this repertoire), but I'd like to add a few words of praise for Cédric Tiberghien; his playing is sensitive and bold and this is in no way an unequal partnership, but one of true understanding and respect.
As with the Beethoven discs what strikes me is the complete lack of ego from the performers, the playing is virtuosic, but never self-conscious. You feel like you are hearing the composer and their music not a showy performance.
Both payers are remarkable in their ability to play pianissimo with hardly any reduction in the fullness of tone, quiet passages simply glow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid recording, 4 Oct 2011
This review is from: Ravel: Complete Music For Violin And Piano; Lekeu: Violin Sonata (Audio CD)
This is a really splendid recording of music that can sometimes feel a little remote. Ibragimova is a fantastic talent - she throws herself at the music whilst never appearing overly showy.
