This review is from: Bach: Goldberg Variations (Audio CD)
This is a delightful disc. The Goldberg Variations form a wonderful work, full of variety, melodic and harmonic invention, and all the emotional and intellectual depth of Bach at his finest. This arrangement for string trio sheds a very pleasurable light on them - particularly in the distinctness of the individual lines which make the structures vividly clear without marring the overall beauty of each Variation.

The Leopold String Trio, now one of the world's leading chamber ensembles, play quite wonderfully on this recording (as on all their others) and bring out all the subtlety, joy and beauty of every one of these pieces. For example, the Aria and Variation 13 are magically aetherial and Kate Gould's fleetness and sheer virtuosity in the phenomenally quick and high cello runs in Variation 26 make it a thing of wonder. The Variations dance when they should and each has its distinct character. It is music making of the highest quality and the effect is spellbinding.

The recorded sound is up to Hyperion's normal excellent standard, the notes are full and interesting and the presentation is attractive. This is a terrific disc all round and very warmly recommended.
