5.0 out of 5 stars Return to form, 16 Mar 2010
This review is from: Sucked in (Paperback)
Maloney's previous novel in the Murray Wheelan series (the fifth), Something Fishy, was a rather feeble offering - Murray spent a lot of the book crawling about in the bush or struggling to stay afloat in the ocean, which I found pretty tiresome. However, his sixth Wheelen novel, Sucked In, represents a real return to the form in some of the earlier novels. The reason is probably that Sucked In is mostly about politics, in particular the labyrinthine politics of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Victoria, which is Maloney's forte. At the same time, Maloney's gift for social observation - the appearance of people and places - is just as great as in his earlier work. The novel has a clever plot with an unexpected ending and certainly kept me reading. Recommended.
