Based on the specifications, and the reviews of this storage device on Amazon, I bought two to solve my storage needs (at different times). Plus I also liked and it's perceived `ruggedness' of said product. The first device died after having it for the less than 24 hours! It appears the controller card failed - very poor. The second drive lasted 6 months, it never failed outright but the heat issues were such that you could burn yourself, and hence I returned it. These devices were never abused and were used with care. I may have been unlucky, but it has stopped me buying another of these products by LaCie. Credit to Amazon for very good customer service with resolving the issues I had. Search the Web and see other reviews and blogs, as I am not the only person to have real problems with these devices. Clearly these devices are more style than function - all very poor and hence not recommended at all.

Loaded up the Lacie, took it to college, (didn't drop it),plugged it into a computer , all OK, it then decided to disengage itself without being touched, and I was unable to retrieve any of my film work that I had backed up on there. All within a week of having purchased new. Totally unreliable product. Absolute rip off.

I bought one of these id 2012 for every day use. I work in he VFX industry as a 3D artists and usually find my self working off a hard drive on my laptop while travelling. So the hard drive was in heavy use. It was having large files moved between different computers on a weekly bassis. So it really got used a lot.

So for the past few years it served me well. But then one day it fell off my workstation and it just died, so not such a shock proof hard drive. Also because it was well out of its warranty LaCie could only offer me a charged repair, where they basically would just remove the internal seagate drive which had broke with a new one. The amount of the repair also would have been nearly as much as just a new replacement (thus a new warranty).

I don't use this drive as a backup drive i only use it for working mobile and transferring projects etc so I Did not loose much precious work. But still its always annoying when a drive fails. But i think the amount I used it it served pretty well. But I think ill try a different make when replacing this one as I have always had bad experienced with seagate hard drives and these LaCie rugged use LaCie hard drives inside.

If you want a fast hard drive for working off and carrying around with you this is a good a not so expensive option. Unless you want to risk it on a even cheaper hard drive. But I would not trust the whole rugged thing, it offers as much protection as a jiffy bag.

Says it all in the heading, based on the Lacie write up I thought this was a great option but it stopped working after a week and nearly derailed a large project I've been working on. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

This devices does what is is supposed to do, and it is one of the easiest to set up and use, based on my experience of having used various different USB storage drives.

I bought this specifically for "Time Machine" backups on my Apple MacBook Pro (Time Machine being the proprietary backup built in to the operating system) and it was an absolute breeze. Plugging the drive into the USB port, an icon appears on the screen and what follows shows a well thought out piece of installation software. It even formats the drive for use with the Mac Operating System. It can install backup software, but only if you want it to. I didn't have it install any software because I didn't need what was offered, so it just set up and it's working perfectly.

Windows users will find the experience just as easy - the software will simply format the drive for windows. No concerns and no drama.

Finally a piece of advice to Mac users: if like me you wish to use this drive for TM backups, you must have the software format the drive as "hfs+" and not the usual windows format. Time Machine won't back up to windows-formatted drives I'm afraid, so please be clear as to how you wish to use it before setting it up. That said, you can always reformat in the future if you want to re-purpose the drive for something else.

Loose connection after just a few weeks. Which is rubbish if you use it for source while editing with Final Cut.

I could have sent it back but I couldn't be bothered at the time (what on EARTH was I thinking?!) as reviewers said that they are all like that.

I might just take it to bits and see if I can repair it (it's not rocket science) as I do like the casing.

so far so good - seems to keep the data safe ok - arrived on time and have had no problems so far

Later - although the drive is solid I wish the port was less flimsy - there is not a good connection to the cable sometimes

All I can say now about it is that its a good job its solid because any minute now I am going to jump up and down on it if it crashes one more time today - I wish I had stuck to my old supposedly fragile drive that lasted for ever! This one isn't going to make it to the end of the week. It just loses the connection - whether that is because of the flimsy physically connection or its the drive itself I don't know.

Very good product, small, light and effective.
the cable might be a bit small, but to use with laptops, it's great.

thanks to the merchant as well for this simple and quick delivery

Only 332 mb available memory. Lacie's support is unfathomable. I don't know what to do about this - prob will just return it when I get back from hols!

I have had a quality issue with the USB connector, but it is a sturdy, reliable and a reasonably fast drive. However it is bulky and garish and only recommended if you really need a rugged drive, otherwise look elsewhere.

Pros
Rugged
Reliable
reasonable transfer speeds

Cons
Bulky compared to many drives
Heavy for a drive
Garish to look at
Supplied USB cable was very loose fitting and could easily fall out if the drive is moved.
