I purchased this DVD Boxset from HMV (sorry Amazon) and have enjoyed it vary much. It really does show what life must have been like back then for a new recruit into the Navy as a junior midshipman. The on-ship scenery was vary good and the acting by all vary good too. It did seem odd seeing Robert Lindsey in a serious role (after seeing him in the long running TV series, My Family) but he was awesome in this; my favourite character.

The box set contains 4 DVDs which run for a total of about 13 hours and covers all 3 series.

The description did say "Set during the 18th century Napoleonic Wars, Horatio Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd), a young and shy midshipman, rises through the ranks to become an admiral" but throughout the series he never rises above lieutenant save for a brief spell as a commander before reverting back to Lieutenant. I guess the description must be referring to the book series.

The quality of the picture is vary good and clearly remastered.

If you enjoyed the books in the series and similar, such as Alexander kent's Richard Bolitho series, then this is a box set for you.

if you like period drama with a humerous bite this is for you. Excellent in every way. Don't hesitate, buy this today people, you won't regret it.

Thoroughly enjoyed the series and may even read the books. It makes a change to watch well acted and filmed programmes these days.

If you enjoyed this series this collection is well worth having. The recording quality is quite good but at the end of the some of the discs the picture jams and the fast forward button is neede to release the rest of the DVD.

Husband loved it and watch them all over a couple of nights.
They arrived very quickly once order was placed.

There are just not enough words to praise this most excellent collection of films and I for one cannot think of a better seafaring series.

The box set is a meaty collection of films almost 2hrs each in length which provides over 13hrs of fine viewing. But the quality is what makes this a classic set to own.

The fine writting, the attention to detail of the language of the time, the amazing sailing ships, the world wide locations, the inter-mixing with real events and of course the excellent acting skills of the cast, with the still young Ioan Gruffuod and the seasoned Robert Lindsay, makes this one of the best series I have ever seen.

I had to buy a second box set cause my kids kept stealing my first one.

I you have any love or interest in the exploits of this character, or if you are a lover of tales of the high seas - then you should buy this set.

Excellent production,great value for money and wonderful historical settings.I am so glad I bought it.I love vessels and boats of the past and reconstructions are very accurate .Of course,ladies,this is not a Jane Austen novel and is full of perils and adventures but the principal caracter is such an hero..!
