Do not listen to the .com review below, firstly John Lee Hooker's Vee Jay output stretched to 127 songs, so you are getting a good sample here but NOT the complete recordings from that period (1955-64) on that label, secondly disc 3 contains the key Riverside album That's My Story which was a key point of development for Hooker, who had had success as a key figure in the Folk Blues boom and was now moving on to a more contemplative approach to his songs. Louis Hayes (drums) and Sam Jones (bass) were clearly from jazz circles but to suggest that the boundaries of different strands of black music, at that time in American, were rigid if just plain wrong. The other musician here is Tony McPhee on guitar who was thoroughly steeped in blues and it is a great album which is not available at an affordable price last time I looked. This anthology is well worth owning but completists will probably go elsewhere.

A very blue swagger with that seminal twelve bar baritone dominant-having said that less is so much more-highly recommended for those who like to imagine they could ever walk this way
