Simon makes us challenge the penalism of late modernity and its relationship to majoritarian politics. Pickup this book and you will, I feel sure, be in a better place to critique the 'law and order' style of neoconservatism. A brilliant read.

This is a useful insight into the US approach towards crime control, although it is not hugely relevant to other jurisdictions (despite the author's claim that it is not a particularly US-centred book).

It is quite easy to read: it's not like other academic books like Garland's Culture of Control. It's not too heavy and it's easy to understand. I have heard...

This is a useful insight into the US approach towards crime control, although it is not hugely relevant to other jurisdictions (despite the author's claim that it is not a particularly US-centred book).

It is quite easy to read: it's not like other academic books like Garland's Culture of Control. It's not too heavy and it's easy to understand. I have heard some people complain that it is badly-written and edited, but I can't say I noticed that.
