5.0 out of 5 stars GET A LIFE, FROM AALTONEN TO ZWERIN
Don't be put off by the two-star review; this is intended as a serious reference work, as the discerning purchaser can detect from the word Encyclopaedia in the title. Nobody's going to read it from cover to cover, but as and when you need a vital fact about a jazz musician this is where you'll find it. Indispensible.

What an enormous amount of research must have gone into the preparation of this dry-as-dust book. A few insights here and there, the odd anecdote, a little humour once in a while - these things are all but invisible. What an enormous amount of research must have gone into the preparation of this dry-as-dust book. A few insights here and there, the odd anecdote, a little humour once in a while - these things are all but invisible. The heavy hand of scholarship has reduced these vibrant musicians to little more than cyphers. The All Music Guide to Jazz, the Rough Guide to Jazz, Gottlieb's Reading Jazz and almost anything by Gary Giddins do a far better job in their different ways.

Just the book for you to while away the hours. It leads you on and on ever searching for the next fact. Memories of names long forgotten were brought back to mind. I found it fascinating. I recommend it to all.
