5.0 out of 5 stars January Songs: Darren Hayman - A real feat well worth a listen., 2 Mar. 2012

This has to be a fairly unique project. In January 2011 former Hefner frontman Darren Hayman set himself the task of writing and recording a song a day for the entire month. That's 31 tracks in 31 days. That's quite a challenge! All 31 tracks that resulted are released on this impressive double album. The first run of 1500 each has a sleeve individually illustrated by Darren. The one we got was a really great drawing of a dog, a simple line sketch but wonderfully capturing a slightly quizzical expression on its face. So we were impressed even before putting a CD in the player!

And when the music started to play we continued to be very impressed. Darren rose to the challenge spectacularly, turning out track after track of catchy tunes and interesting lyrics on a whole range of subjects. OK, so it's a little rough around the edges, the nature of the challenge meant that there was no time to polish each track, but there isn't really a duffer on here and by and large it's a magnificent album. It's accessible, which is an increasingly rare thing these days.

An excellent album, a real feat by any standards. It would be churlish to award it anything less than 5 stars.

It is an overwhelming accomplishment to craft 31 songs within the period of a month but it works so flawlessly! I thoroughly enjoyed this release and I have come to realize Darren Hayman as one of England's most gifted songsmiths!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, 6 Mar. 2012
This review is from: January Songs (Audio CD)
'January Songs' is a collection of 30 songs that ex-Hefner frontman Darren Hayman wrote over January (one a day!). Much like The Magnetic Fields '69 Love Songs' the quantity of the songs never outweighs the quality; Haymans been perfecting his craft for years now and knows his way round a good tune. Darrens been very prolific recently and this release follows hot-on-the- heels of 'The Ships Piano', an album of piano ballads. Despite the prevalence of concepts in his recent output it's the songwritting that takes center stage as usual; a mixture of acoustic laments, folk singalongs and lo-fi/twee indie. There's a few guest spots on this album too, including Gordan Mclntyre of Scottish indie-types Ballboy, Jack Hayter (ex-Hefner bandmate) and the Wave Pictures. It's a very 'indie' affair but it would be a shame if it was purely Haymans fanbase that bought this album. An engrossing and hugely enjoyable listen, this'll be the soundtrack to many a quiet night in. Gorgeous.
