4.0 out of 5 stars 28 Tales
I should point out some things about this book. Don't look at the product description, this is the kindle book I have read, obviously it hasn't been signed by any of the authors. This is an annual book as such, where the editors have tried to find the best stories in a given year. This e-book edition was actually first released in a treebook edition in 2010, and the...

3.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating collection
A fascinating collection of the best short crime stories published in 2009. Variable in quality, with a few typos (at least in the Kindle edition), and some of the laziest, most cliche-ridden writing coming from the most experienced pulp writers. Kicking off with the masterful Dennis Lehane, the rest of the good stuff either introduces us to fascinating new...

I should point out some things about this book. Don't look at the product description, this is the kindle book I have read, obviously it hasn't been signed by any of the authors. This is an annual book as such, where the editors have tried to find the best stories in a given year. This e-book edition was actually first released in a treebook edition in 2010, and the year concerned is 2009. If you look in the 'Go To' menu you will see that there is no active table of contents showing, but there is one, either click back a few times from the beginning, or go to Location 22.

Some of the stories here are by well known authors, whereas some are by authors that aren't necessarily that well known in this country, also chances are that you may have read one or more of these stories in other anthologies, I for instance found one here that I had read about two weeks ago in another anthology. All in all this is a really good collection of tales, that should suit most people. With the opening piece about a stray dog that leads to murder, to plotting killing off an elderly relative, through murder and blackmail to tax evasion, there is definitely something for everyone here. There is also one Mike Hammer tale, and two 'Holmes' tales here. At the moment, whilst this is on promo this is a book that is well worth getting, you can't really go wrong here.

Along with the stories themselves there is also here pieces at the end of each story about the authors, and also their websites, also there is an introduction that gives you crime awards winners for 2009.

A fascinating collection of the best short crime stories published in 2009. Variable in quality, with a few typos (at least in the Kindle edition), and some of the laziest, most cliche-ridden writing coming from the most experienced pulp writers. Kicking off with the masterful Dennis Lehane, the rest of the good stuff either introduces us to fascinating new characters/franchises (Dave Zeltserman, Kris Nelscott) or embodies classic modern Americana, only touching tangentially on genre (Luis Alberto Urrea, Laura Lippman). There are even a couple of clever Sherlock Holmes stories in there.

Well worth a look.
