5.0 out of 5 stars Rare treats.
Anyone remember Peter Jackson having humour and charm as well as a nice eye for detail? The people behind this do.

This is a very admirable horror/comedy that nods towards PJ and to be fair is a stunning feature-debut from Jalmari Helander. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll say this is a dark twist on the Santa Claus legend, very nicely executed...

3.0 out of 5 stars so so very close
Rare Exports , does such a wonderful, effortless job of recapturing that slightly dangerous, pre-PC reckless streak that made such '80s-era kid flicks as E.T. and The Goonies , so distinctive and memorable, it almost makes up for the fact that the movie quite sadly omits the very component that should have been its crowning jewel. I can't be more specific about that...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Comedy Enchantment, 4 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Set at Christmas time on the Finnish/Russian border, this Finnish movie sets out with tongue firmly in cheek and kicks Hollywood's trite annual Santa offerings firmly between the legs. delving (elving, even) into the darker side of xmas.

A top secret Russian excavation is underway on an isolated, snow-covered hill, near the remote homes of a group of reindeer-hunters. As explosives are used to get inside the hill, strange goings-on begin occurring. One young boy starts reading up on folkloric tales of the dark history of the creature people refer to as "Santa Claus" and, as the village's children start to disappear, becomes convinced that the hill excavations have stumbled onto a terrible discovery, and that time is running out.

With, in parts, an almost fairytale atmosphere plus some Christmas parody thrown in for good measure, this dark Finnish comedy is a welcome relief from the cheesy nonsense of the regular Yuletide yarns.

Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Believe, and so will you., 29 Dec 2011
I had free preview tickets to see this movie and had no idea what what was in store for me. That was a year ago. Now I have bought 2 copies on dvd and continue to broaden the Christmas horizons of my friends and family. This movie is among my top 5 films ever. It's a gripping thriller, a touching coming of age film, a dash of comedy, a spatter of horror and an instant Christmas classic to supersede all others. I dont want to give anything away - it's best to discover it yourself, unencumbered by expectations set by others, but rest assured, there is something here for everyone. It's subtitled so as long as you are able to read, watch this movie. then tell me what You think.

2.0 out of 5 stars I need someone to explain this movie to me, 18 Jan 2014
Honestly, I didn't get this movie.

Archaeologists open the world's largest burial mound. Santa Claus escapes... but's he's evil, only punishing the naughty children... and then what?

There were slasher parts - was that the elves? And what the hell happened at the end with all the children being collected? It seemed to be a script written by The Brothers Grimm if they were imagining Gremlins... but there is an awful lot of time spend with nothing happening. A good idea that was wasted.
