While we should not judge past times by present standards I am glad that we now live in a more multi cultural society without the blatant racism and antisemitism that he portrays, no doubt there are people who still think that way privately but at least it isn't socially acceptable any more

The product description is perfectly accurate (even if it does contain at least one glaring spoiler), as far as the titles contained goes. The product description is perfectly accurate (even if it does contain at least one glaring spoiler), as far as the titles contained goes. But to call it a supernatural mystery collection is misleading, as the majority of the stories are not concerned with the supernatural at all. It is also not five novels; the first four are novellas, the last a collection of short stories. All are linked by certain characters and settings. Most revolve around London's Limehouse district, and the colourful goings on there. They are entertaining enough, and one or two might even be called outstanding, but most never rise above the formulaic. No character ever approaches the fascination of Rohmer's great master-villain, Fu Manchu, or his hero Nayland Smith. In fact some of the hero characters are downright repulsive to a modern reader. The racism that marks all Rohmer's work (a product of his time, it should be remembered) is also much more pronounced in these stories, so if you find it offensive I should avoid the whole collection. I admit I found some of the stories very difficult to read because of the appalling bigotry. If you are not a fan of the genre, I wouldn't start sampling it with this set.

The editing of this is very poor and I was annoyedby thenumerous spelling errors. Stories were predictable, and slow in developing.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant diversion., 5 July 2013

Throwaway literature from the days when having an imagination was nothing to be ashamed of. You may not want to read these over and over again, but they're a good read once, and show more individuality might be expected in popular fiction. An interesting blend of fantasy and the concerns of the time, giving a an insight into the odder strains of thought in the period. Sometimes a little stilted, and maybe even comical to a modern reader, not the best I've ever read, but it satisfied my curiosity about this author without being a disappointing experience.
