3.0 out of 5 stars Kidnap, Hit men, Landfill and Elephants in this Thai Based Action Fest!
This is set in Bangkok and tells the story of Curtie Church (Djimon Hounsou) who is a hired `hit man'. He has been hired by a distraught father whose daughter has been abducted by some drug gang where by they turn her into an addict as her introduction to being trafficked onto the sex industry. Where she winds up on a mortuary slab.

So as retribution he pays...

Djimon Honsou plays a black ops killer hired by a Thai businessman to avenge the death of his daughter at the hands of pimps in this violent action thriller. Essentially what you get is a very similar tale to 'Taken' except instead of Liam Neeson you get a big black guy killing lots of Thai gangsters using a selection of big guns provided by Kevin Bacon's character 'English'. The story has a mystical element to it in the form of a young Thai girl who follows himn around both helping and apparently hindering him as he gets more swept up in the plight of the prostitutes and takes it beyond the original job. The action is very well choreographed and one particular scene in a wood at night could almost be described as a dance of death. Honsou makes a good assassin and Kevin Bacon gives a good performance despite his awful English accent. The print quality is very good and the soundtrack is capable but not outstanding. Overall if you like a good action thriller you will probably enjoy this.

So as retribution he pays him to kill six for a fixed bounty. Church duly obliges and attracts the attention of one of the girls, who follows him and becomes a sort of partner, Mae. The grieving father then asks for a bit more revenge and Church is starting to feel empathy for the girls so he signs up. This time he needs some new weaponry and where better to go than an International Arms Dealer in the shape of Jimmy `The Brit' (Kevin Bacon) who after an initial reticence agrees to hire some kick butt guns that the army would be proud of. A word on Mr Bacon, I have immense respect for him as an actor, but he really could have done with a language coach on his Mary Poppins attempts at an English accent. It is dubbed at one point and then he starts to sound like a lost Australian, pretty poor and verging on the embarrassing.

Meanwhile Churchy has declared war on the gangs who have formed an uneasy alliance to find out who is killing them all. Church and Mae take up residence at a Buddhist Temple which he uses to launch his attacks from and we get lots of Eastern wisdom from the ephemeral Mae.

This is a very full on action film, the action is pretty much there right from the start and is actually really good though not gratuitous. There are a few twists in the plot but nothing heart stopping and some nudity but mainly incidental which you would expect in a film of this nature. The few plot holes are forgivable until the end and that is where you have to do a rather large leap of faith to believe what has happened, I can not say what, as it is a plot spoiler. So for a ninety minute action fest with some decent plot and questionable accents, this is the one for you. If you can live with that and the plot holes then you should enjoy, but I felt it was just OK, hence the rating but will still give Mr Bacon another chance as he still tends to deliver in most of his films.

4.0 out of 5 stars KILLING AND SHOOTING, 19 Sep 2013

The Movie Guy "Movies from A to Z" (United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Elephant White [DVD] (DVD)
In the movie a white elephant is given by one rival gang to another as a peace offering. In Siam, kings would offer them as gifts to someone who was obnoxious so they would go broke attempting the up keep. The movie deals with the child prostitution trafficking in Thailand as a background, but does very little to expose the horrors, but rather concentrates on killing.

A man hires Djmon Hounsou to find his abducted daughter working somewhere in a Thai brothel. He also has a bounty for every bad guy that is killed. Djmon contacts Kevin Bacon, now with a British accent, in order to obtain guns. Bacon runs a legit brothel and formally worked with Djmon. Using the weapons, Hounsou is able to start a war between two rival gangs. The head count increases.

During his campaign, a girl joins up with him and helps him with some spiritual guidance, as well as a look out. There are minor twists as people and alliances are not quite what they seem, with one major twist at the end I admit I didn't see coming.

There is a missed opportunity in this film for a little humor. Kevin Bacon collects guns used in movies. What they should have mentioned were guns used specifically in Bacon movies. They did not.

Hounsou play a stone cold killer who wants to make things right while getting paid. His acting ability is better than the Rock, but below that of Van Diesel. A lot of shooting and killing.

Parental Guidance: Nudity, f-bomb, and Bacon with a British accent. 3 1/2 stars.

This film delivers the lot. Non stop action, lots of meaningful dialogue and a twist at the end that is a inspiration to others , in the area of human suffering. Brilliant acting by the key characters, real thai environment and a plot to challenge the most intelligent of scholars. Loved it from start to finish. I rarely give 5 stars but when a extra ordinary film turns up then I do. This is a one off with real spirit, meaning and brilliantly made.

As a fan of mr bacons since Friday the 13th I decided to give this a shot. And aside from a way dodgy accent Kev delivers. The films a bit naff tho. The action and violence is good also.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seen it all before... and better, 25 Sep 2013
This review is from: Elephant White [DVD] (DVD)
There's not an awful lot to say about `Elephant White' (apart from observations regarding Kevin Bacon's accent, but we'll get to that later). It's about an assassin, hired to destroy gangs in Thailand in revenge for what they did to his daughter.

So he goes and kills them.

It's a revenge movie. Yes, the bad guys get punished - as you would expect - and yes, the hero does at least run into some trouble along the way. And, our hero is aided by none other than a BRITISH Kevin Bacon. For some reason, he has been told to adopt a borderline cockney/southern accent. When I first heard it, I thought the film had been dubbed. At least he's consistent throughout the film, but his voice is rather off-putting. However, he's not in it as much as the film's advertising poster may hope to imply. Fans of Kevin be warned: he's not in it that much.

Yes, there's action. And there's some nice `sniper fights' which make a change from simply blasting the bad guys up close and personal. However, it's all been done before. It's an okay movie, but there's nothing original enough to make it into a really great movie (apart from Bacon's weird accent - that's worth hearing in itself).

So Djimon Hounsou is this inconspicuous (yeah, right) assassin in Thailand, Kevin Bacon is his British (go figure) arms supplier. DH gets hired to kill some guys, to avenge the death of a child, but nothing is quite what it seems. A young Thai girl keeps popping up to help him, which is all a bit strange. The denouement is a bit obvious, IMHO, and the ending plain daft. But if you like a bit of violent action, then it's OK, and worth a marketplace-size price. Not at all worth the £6.53 current full price.
