Like the writer, loathe the main character
on 13 July 2015
I have really mixed feelings about this trilogy, firstly let me say that I think Denise Mina is a fine writer and her characters and dialogue were very well written for me with one or two exceptions. Next lies my problem with these books, the main character of Maureen I found to be totally unlikeable and with no empathy for her it was hard to wish her a good outcome. It was hard to believe that such a character had one friend, let alone those willing to support her appalling actions. I know that she is meant to be the outcome of her past, but her need to take on the problems of those she hardly or does not know (book 2), was unbelievable in the extreme. I also find putting these books into the 'crime' genre somewhat strange.
I felt the need to see the three books out and will try another Denise Mina novel as I do believe she is a writing talent. I just hope that her other lead characters are more likeable or I will not be able to read any more
