4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock
This is a decent priced decent selection of Classic Rock.

All the tracks are decent and the Rock Lover will enjoy most of the tracks.
The odd one that they don't just press next track on the CD player?

It has a good mix of artists and seems to have put together with thought and care unlike some compilations that I could mention.

You...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I waited the arrival of this CD with excitement. When I played it I was very disappointed.Nowhere was it mentioned that the songs were not the full versions.E.g Stairway to Heaven -Far Corporation was cut short by 2minutes.If I had known would not have purchased.

You get a whole lot of different artists here again unlike a lot of reissues who seem to have about 30 tracks 16 of which appear on every selection.

Don't believe me check out how many times Roundabout by Yes appears on tens of 'Prog Rock' and Rock CDs (I love Yes but on every release?)

This has a good variety and if you buy it as a gift for someone they are sure to be delighted.

Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Compilation, 2 Jun 2014

As rock compilations go, you can expect to see the same tracks come and go to make an ultimate must-listen for any rock fan. Moreover, whilst a few of these obvious gems are present (Blue Oyster Cult's (Don't Fear) The Reaper; Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell; Boston's More Than a Feeling) the majority of the track listing is stuff that would not be associated with the concept of a rock anthem. Therefore, whilst die-hard may discuss whether several of these tracks deserve the 'anthem' label being placed onto them- Toto's excellent track Rosanna is one that might trouble most classic rock purists may have issues with the most- the flow and pace of each CD is enjoyable.

Disc 1 is slightly the stronger disc of the bunch, but only because the flow of most of the tracks make pleasant listening with the likes of Europe, Alice Cooper, Survivor, and Mr Mister side by side. Whilst Disc 2 sounds great on paper, with your obvious choice of rock classics from the start before delving into more stuff from the 1960s and 1970s from the likes of Jefferson Airplane and Kansas, the result leaves an abrupt change of mood. But then again, any compilation that features the oddity that is Captain Beefheart before plunging into the instrumental Frankenstein is always going to sound like a spanner being thrown into the works.

Haynes Classic Rock Ultimate Guide to Rock Anthems is an entertaining compilation that avoids being too boring for die-hard rock fans, by including a mixture of tracks that don't get as much as attention as others do, from the likes of The Alan Parson Project and Cheap Trick, amongst the stuff no rock compilation can go without. Overall, it is an entertaining listen for newcomers of the genre, but also enough content to keep the more experienced listener occupied for its 2-hour-plus running time.
