3.0 out of 5 stars Great sound but...USB and MP3 issue
The Sony Blue-Ray BRAVIA is great value for money and if the USB/MP3 function had worked consistently I would have given this player 5 Stars. The reason that I am giving it 3 stars is because I particularly wanted to listen to MP3's via USB. I have dedicated an old PC to capturing some BBC Poetry and Shakespeare cassettes and other plays to hard-disk then saving to MP3...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony BDVE 280 Bluray Player,
This review is from: Sony BDVE280.CEK 3D Blu-Ray Disc/DVD 5.1ch Home Cinema BRAVIA Internet Video with iPod Dock (Electronics)Arrived via Yodel/Amazon suitably packaged and at the time of purchase there were no customer reviews posted so had to rely on the internet for these and Sony UK website all seemed positive and decided to buy, it has 3 HDMI ports, optical output and internet connectivity, 2 USB ports along with 3D, DVD upscaling to near full HD and an FM radio although the latter wasnt a must have for me and 1000 watts of power. Unboxed the Blu Ray player which was really well protected and packaged as you would expect for a consignment of this value to reveal a shiny black player and made all the connections to my TV via HDMI lead (not supplied but only £ on Amazon). If you have used a Sony PS3 you will be used to the menu list and set up, if your not it is really simple to follow and after powering up and entering the initial menu was advised that newer software was available so l downloaded via the LAN lead (not supplied) which was connected into my Virgin broadband router, this took about 10 minutes to complete and l was up and running playing my first disc. Sound is awesome along with the picture quality making movies far more realistic with crisper sounds.
I have upgraded from an 8 year old Panasonic DVD home theatre system to this, you can certainly see and hear the difference between this and the new one (Sony wins by a long shot!)the unit even comes with an IPOD dock comlete with a USB lead and single video lead. Have connected my IPOD touch and can listen to all my music or videos although cant view photos but think this is an output issue with my Samsung tv not the Blue Ray player. All in all 5 stars, very pleased with my £ purchase and dont think you will be disapointed, l will leave a more technical review to someone better qualified.
Sony BDVE280.CEK 3D Blu-Ray Disc/DVD 5.1ch Home Cinema BRAVIA Internet Video
Update on above: I have used most applications on offer and found everything to work fine and easy to navigate through the menu. The surround sound is fantastic and crystal clear, the picture quality on my 720p HD telly is great can't wait to upgrade to a full 1020p HD tv to appreciate what this player has to offer. I would add that you may need to play around with speaker settings to get the right depth/distance and sounds from them but once your set up then sit back and enjoy...

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding system,
This review is from: Sony BDVE280.CEK 3D Blu-Ray Disc/DVD 5.1ch Home Cinema BRAVIA Internet Video with iPod Dock (Electronics)Having spent a good while deciding which system to buy I'm really glad I went with the Sony BDVE280. Connectivity and configuration was simple and the sound quality is outstanding.
I'm running a PS3 and my Virgin+ set top box through the system and both sound fantastic. I've also used the ipod dock which is easy to use and great for parties.
The home menu is a little slow when compared with the PS3 systems but you can't be expecting the same performance anyway so it's no bother to me.
For the money this is a great system. Fully recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing, it does everything I needed and more!,
This review is from: Sony BDVE280.CEK 3D Blu-Ray Disc/DVD 5.1ch Home Cinema BRAVIA Internet Video with iPod Dock (Electronics)Absolutely amazing, it does everything I needed and more! With two HDMI inputs and an Optical input.
I run my Sky+ HD box, Xbox 360 and optical in from the TV through the Surround Sound and they all sound amazing.
The 3D is again, pretty amazing, we have only watched Saw 3D, but that was stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to argue at his price,
The system is very well made and will compliment any piano block shiny TV sold in the last few years. The speakers are also solid and reasonably discrete. Slight stingyness in the length of the front cables only a very minor quibble. Out the box the sound is very impressive, as mentioned in another review you should turn down the subwoofer from its default setting, unless you have a hankering for unrealistic fat bass. The real pleasure in these systems is the soundstage, and the Sony handles left to right and front to back panning well. Set up is easy, although the default setting is to output sound to the speakers AND the hdmi. If you then connect the TV back into the box via an optical cable - as the manual recommends - you have created a feedback loop and you will get a howl from the speakers. Venture into system settings in the menu to sort this. The usb slots can read hard drives and play multiple file types. It wont play divx files out the box however you can alter these files in one click to be seen by the sony as xvids. They then play flawlessly. See [...] just change the type of your file to be xvid and XVID (this will make sense when you see the software). All of my divx files play fine after following this 10 second process. The only downside (and im being picky) is the musical ability of the system. Playing my ipod or laptop through the line in sockets gives a very flat sound. It's not particularly suited to music. However for the most part, this system is unbelievable value.

5.0 out of 5 stars And the Gadget Of The Year Award goes to......,
The set up is idiot proof, with step by step 'easy start' and colour-coded cables - and I assure you that even the least tech-minded person will have no troubles and when its set-up...it'll blow you away.
The sound from the speakers is crystal clear, with pre-set options such as movie surround, music surround etc. and a massive improvement on my previous (older) Technics system.
The design is classy and aesthetically pleasing. Would suit almost any room.
The easy to follow on-screen menus are dedicated to each of this systems key features;
BLU RAY/DVD/CD PLAYER - excellent visual & sound through HDMI cable (not supplied).
Does not support SCART, but has 2 x HDMI, optical, video and RCA connections available.
IPOD DOCK - simple plug and play and your whole Ipod/iphone content, including videos is displayed on your t.v while playing in crystal clear surround!
INTERNET - My favourite feature, I have the system permanently linked to my router via a £2 LAN cable. The system has loads of preset internet channels like You Tube, Facebook, Music Channels, Video Channels, Internet movie channels...you name it, even has cooking guides for her and Golf guides for me!! sorted! Anyhting you can think of is accessed via easy menus as long as you are connected to the net - Can also be connected wirelessly (wireless adaptor needed - not supplied, costs around £30)
USB PORTS - both at front and rear of the unit, plug in memory sticks with pictures, music etc and play through your t.v and the surround speakers.
FM RADIO - with the ability to preset all your favourite channels.
CONNECTIVITY - Easy to link up games consoles in HD, such as XBOX, Wii, PS3 etc.
This system also syncs with Bravia t.v's but I don't have one so cant comment on that! Also, to use the 3D function (Watch 3D Blu-Ray etc.) please note that a 3D tv is needed, this system does not magically convert any old telly into a 3D one!!
If I had to comment on any negatives, I would say that although 1 X short video RCA cable, all speaker cables and one USB cable for the ipod dock are included, no other cables are...such as HDMI. Please be assured that an HDMI cable for £1.99 is as good to the untrained eye and ears as an HDMI cable for £49.99 so don't spend an uneccessary fortune!
Also, the front speaker cables are quite short (about 1.5m) and I had to add more cable via cable connector blocks, took about 5 minutes. Not an issue if you situate the speakers near the system as suggested. The rear speakers have about 25m of cable so no issues there.
I have seen systems at 4 times the price of this and not as good. This is truly a bargain and it's future-proof with internet and 3D capabilities so you shouldn't need to upgrade for a while after buying this one!
Hope my info helps!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound, easy set up,
The instructions are very detailed and make it an easy to set up product. The rear speaker wires are very long and I didn't have a problem pinning these round skirtings and doors to get to the back of the room and still have spare wire. All the connections are colour coded, which certainly helps not having to trace the cables when you've got 6 wires to plug in.
The satellite speakers are very light so wall mounting hasn't been a problem for me,
Once plugged in, there is an easy set up option, but most people will probably want to set their system up to suit the room. This is very simple. You can set the distance to each speaker and the sound level of each to get the perfect set up. It may take a while to get the perfect sound set up, (i'm still tweaking mine to try to get it just right).
Picture and sound quality is excellent. THe system also upscales DVD's to a higher quality. Connectivity is really good, I have my Sky+ HD box and xbox 360 plugged into mine via HDMi and it certainly enhances the experience of these. The included iPod dock is a good addition and the sound quality through this and the FM radio is also great.
As a Lovefilm subscriber I can stream films directly through the system and the quality is better than watching on my laptop. The same goes for BBC IPlayer.
You can browse the internet through it, but this is a bit awkward using the remote, although this isn't a problem for me as it wasnt the reason i bought this product.
The only thing I haven't been able to test is a 3d blu ray as I don't have a 3d TV (yet!).
Overall, a great product which I would recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Player/System but not perfect,
I have given only given it 4 stars because of a number of things it is lacking that I would of still expected in a (sony) home theatre solution of this size:-
1. No headphone socket - I know the whole point is to listen through the 1000w of speakers however when you dont want to wake the family an audio out of ANY sort would have been good.
2. Although the product says it "streams" it does NOT stream from local network only internet. I really dont understand this and it is a basic function of most Sony Players (am using a budget sony quite happily to do this in other rooms). So if you have content sitting on a pc, mac or nas it will not see it.
3. If you are planning on using the device on a TV without HDMI beware that this will work with discs played through the system but not if you plan to use the HDMI inputs.

5.0 out of 5 stars so good but one small niggle,
The only let down is the remote, it is clear, the button functions and their locations are fairly well thought out, it is responsive at all angles, but I have a gripe. the design and feel of it does not reflect the product's price. it feels cheap to touch. it has a nasty corrugated feel to the bottom of it. My sony tv's remote is a real nice high quality unit, this one just feels like an after thought. There also doesn't seem to be an easy way to switch inputs without going through the xmedia or whatever you call it menu. this doesn't bother me as I have a Sony Tv so the tv swaps the hdmi to an output when watching tv and the home cinema picks this up and automatically swaps to tv mode. I just don't know how it would fair if you didn't have a sony and were using the optical in? would it pick this up and swap it over for you or would you need to access the menu? perhaps there is a button on the remote I have missed!
so in conclusion, yes this is a brilliant bit of kit, i'm not sure the extra money is worth it for it's bigger brother - unless you watch youtube extensively as you can use the keyboard on your phone for typing so I hear. The added abilities of this 'app' may also be of interest to some who want to use DLNA and what not as you can browse your library on the app and fire it across, but I think I made the right choice. picture quality is great, sound great, excellent if you have a sony Tv just the remote is a bit cheap. i'd still recommend it highly to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony Blu Ray Cinema Surround,
Looks good and ties in well with the Bravia telly, ARC works well via the HDMI cable enabling a much richer sound when watching cable.
Really cannot find fault withe the equipment.
