The Nikkai brand (sold by Maplin) offer a range of portable handheld TVs, this being the smallest with a 3.5inch screen.

Firstly, and most importantly, it should be noted that customer satisfaction with this TV will depend almost entirely on the ability to pick up a decent signal. Remember also that since the completion of digital switchover in most UK areas during early 2012 the signal strength should be stronger, and therefore the ability of small TV devices like these to pick up a signal should be much improved. This should be borne in mind when considering earlier reviews of this TV.

I live in the London TV region in an area of `moderate' signal strength and get perfect reception on this set with only minimal pixelation. Lack of reception can be frustrating, but it should not automatically be attributed to any shortfall in quality of the product. My best advice is to check the signal strength in the area where this is going to be used.

Where I do get a good reception - and that's at least 95% of the places I've tried - the picture quality from the 3.5in screen is incredibly good. 3.5in is pretty small so the picture has to be good to enable comfortable viewing, and I've found watching sports such as football, tennis and snooker easily possible. Quite amazing really from the tiny telescopic aerial on top. The built-in speaker at the back is perfectly adequate, and life from the built-in battery is at least 3 hours when fully charged via the (supplied) USB cable.

That's the good points. On the downside the controls are very basic consisting of buttons on each side of the unit. Two control volume up and down, two are for channel up and down, and the ESC and OK buttons bring up a simple on-screen menu to select functions (TV, radio, MP3 via micro SD slot). TV (including all freeview ones in range) and DAB radio channels are easily scanned and automatically stored, but the big minus point comes when changing channels - you can only go up or down one at a time via the side buttons. It works, but it feels frustratingly slow.

So, providing the signal strength in the area is good, this is a truly pocket sized TV which delivers crystal clear images and is worth paying the pocket money price it is currently available for.

Finally It's worth noting that Nikkai produce a 4.3in touch screen TV with recording facility via full size SD card which offers a whole lot more than this 3.5in model. See my review of it at 4.3" PORTABLE TOUCHSCREEN DIGITAL FREEVIEW TV RECORDER

This was a birthday present for my husband. We were on the verge of returning it as we couldn't get anything up on it.Hubby finally noticed on the box picture that there was an aerial. It is very difficult and tiny to see, however if you pull it out,lo and behold you have a perfect picture! We haven't tried anywhere but at home so far. We live in Northampton verging on open countryside so must be somewhere close to a transmitter. Fingers crossed it will work in other places.

Hopelessly insensitive. Doesn't find any channels at all using it's internal aerial.

My attempts to couple a stronger signal in from our external aerial using a signal booster did not help at all.

This must be too insensitive to be practical by a huge margin.

Maybe those people who live within a mile or two of a major TV transmitter would find it usable.

Update: After analogue switch off I find I can just about receive the BBC multiplex but only if I hold the device in the exact right position near a window. Also at a holiday location about 8 miles from a main transmitter several, but not all multiplexes could be received in the same way.

This magnificent digital tv may be small and have basic features, it however posesses excellent vision and audio and obviously subject to area reception. Pound for pound I would rate it as being very good value for money.

When ordering this, I didn't realise it had no external aerial socket - I wasn't looking properly because all the other ones do. The internal aerial will only work in very strong signal areas, which mine is not. The device was therefore almost useless. However, I worked out a solution. You can get a piece of coax, and strip away all the outer layers, just leaving copper wire. Then wrap it around the internal aerial, and plug it into an rooftop aerial. You should get reception. Now that this is done, I consider it cheap for what it does.

It did not work in my area (despite being in sight of a transmitter) and did not come provided with USB lead as advertised.
