Subtle change of direction for Burial,

It was written that at the time of his last LP Untrue, Burial was listening exclusively to Black Secret Technology. This time around, I think he may have been clocking Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol.2.The style is still recognisably Burial's of course - as I say, this is a subtle change in direction - but there's a distinct shift from the dark, Gerald-style jungle vibes of his previous work, to a queasy uneasiness more in common with early Richard D James. Of the three tracks on this EP, only "NYC" (which, incidentally, evokes anything but the Big Apple) could be in danger of being formulaic. The best track, "Stolen Dog" is a kind of beatdown "Come to Daddy" for the dubstep generation. For those without a record player ("Street Halo" has only previously been available as a 12") this MP3 download is an excellent way to find out what Burial has been up to since the last album. I'm not holding my breath, but hopefully there's a new full length release around the corner? If it's as good as this it will be worth waiting for. |
