Fenix TK41, excellent torch, 16 Jan 2012
This review is from: Fenix TK41 / the first brightest XM flashlight with max 800 lumens (Sports)
Having owned this torch for over a month, I thought I'd write a review.
If you've never used an LED torch before, or used a cheap one, this torch will amaze you.
The beam on full power is so bright that it can illuminate things almost half a kilometer away. The centre of the beam is very bright, and there is enough spill to make it useful for just plain walking around at night.
The pros:
Most super bright LED torches use CR123A or rechargeable lithium batteries at the moment. This torch uses 8x88 batteries (although it will work on 4, too) making it easy to replace the batteries wherever you are. I'd hate to take a lithium powered torch away and find I had no access to mains electricity! You also get high capacity, so a longer run time. 8 AA batteries rated at 2900mAh each, compared to one or two lithium cells with roughly the same rating. Think about it!
The construction is also brilliant, and it really can be submerged in water, as lots of youtube videos will demonstrate.
The power modes are well spaced, and even the lowest brightness is adequate for walking around in pitch black, meaning you can use the torch for extended periods without worrying about battery life. Mentioning the power modes, there are 4 levels, and not 6 as advertised. Two of the modes are strobe modes, a high frequency strobe, and an SOS (it flashes SOS in morse).
Another thing I really enjoyed is that the torch will not roll around if you lie it flat, and if you stand it on its tail in a room during a power cut, you can light the whole room.
The cons: This torch is large, so its not the kind of light you'd find yourself throwing in your pocket just in case you needed it. This is because of the AA battery configuration.
Overall:
If you want a big torch, with easily replaced batteries and a long beam, and don't mind a large form factor, this is the torch for you.
If you want a torch that will throw a really long beam, this is for you, too.
However, the large beam may be ideal for searching for stuff, but if you just want a bright spill for walking around, you may want to consider something else, the narrow spot in the middle means that the maximum 800 lumens has been quite focused.
For good spill from a fenix torch, you can try the small PD series.
If you want the same light with lithium batteries, you can try the TK35.
A fantastic torch all considered.

Fantastic torch for professional use, 20 Jan 2012
This review is from: Fenix TK41 / the first brightest XM flashlight with max 800 lumens (Sports)
This torch is really an upgrade from cheaper flashlights I've been acquainted with until now. I got it for my boyfriend after having heard him discuss the benefits of having a professional flashlight and what lumens measure. I have to admit I am new to the refined differences between flashlights, but I definitely saw the difference when he took me walking at dark to show me all the levels and the various lumen levels between them.
I want to say thank you to the previous reviewer who took the time to describe the pros of the product in such details. Due to his review I knew to purchase a set of rechargeable AA batteries to have for the flashlight and it convinced me that this one was the perfect gift.
I saw for myself the SOS mode and found it very impressive and useful for whenever you go hiking and get lost or other emergency situations.
The beam is really powerful and after buying it I did search on youtube and there are several videos illustrating aspects such as the water-resistance and how it can light well through water (I can imagine losing something in shallow water and needing light o find it.).
High-end product for those who are in the know and require a professional flashlight!
