Fladen smock in use
on 4 May 2013
Purchased as an oversmock for use when wood turning and carving, the garment is certainly strong enough to withstand sustained workshop use although the front pockets would benefit from flaps to keep sawdust and chips out, or fitting onto the rear. Sleeve openings at the cuff are wide and caught easily on machine surface projections but this was solved by the addition of heavy duty pop studs - one to each side to pull the cuff firmly into the wrist. The main benefit was low price for very similar products made to virtually the same pattern and in the same material. (Some similar products were 'twice' the price !). The small logo on the chest is fine. Not quite so sure about the 'shoulder width' version across the back but if it was the advertising that secured the lower price then fair enough ! Due to the robust nature of the material it acts as a good barrier to the loss of body heat and has been used over just a shirt in an unheated outside workshop in temperatures around 3 - 5 degrees. Not washed as yet as it has only been in use for just under a month but I don't see it shrinking or wearing out any time soon.
