4.0 out of 5 stars Great introductory companion to Russian watches
Superb compilation of articles on affordable Russian watches. Could perhaps use a few more illustrations, but enthusiastically written and thoroughly recommended.

The book is a collection af articles / reviews of Russian / Soviet watches the author possessed over the past several years. As such it is more a personal assessment than a comprehensive overview or an encyclopaedic coverage of the subject.

You get several reviews of the main models of the more famous Russian brands, such as Poljot, Raketa, Vostok, Zlatoust, etc. The author covers both his experience in wearing / using the watches, as well as the history of the manufacturer in question and the specific model, the movement used, covers the standard issues such as case, crown, bracelet / strap, luminescence and waterproofing, and then also where one can purchase it, get it serviced or what some useful alterations / modifications are (mostly getting a replacement strap).

The author has no illusions that the watches are on the very cheap end of mechanical watchmaking and that therefore the fit and finish will not be equivalent to watches costing a high multiple of the modest prices demanded here.

The booklet is a good first overview into the subject (if you are a complete novice) but probably not something to get a horological expert / watch collector excited or rereading it constantly. Still, at the modest price demanded, it may be worthwhile taking a look before plunging into the ownership of one of the more adventurous mechanical timepieces from Russia.

Very interesting in parts, pictures are poor quality and information a bit repetitive, however a topic that as been neglected over the years so this is a contribution to rectifying this. Russian watches have become collectable, they are slowly getting the recognition they deserve and come with a rich history that fascinates in a world where we are still seeking answers.

If proof were needed, this book illustrates you do not have to spend a fortune to have a good, long lasting and fine watch on your wrist. I to caught the Soviet memorabilia bug when the wall came down, included in this was Russian watches. I concur, these are fine watches.
