4.0 out of 5 stars Breaking through the Teflon coating
Slickly made mini series with attention to period detail. Greg Kinnear stands out as uncannily like JFK and Tom Wilkinson is excellent as always as Joe Kennedy. The Cuban Missile Crisis makes for very interesting viewing bearing in mind just how close the world came to nuclear conflict. 3.0 out of 5 stars Tales of a family
"The Kennedys" caused a big stir before it was even aired, since the History Channel refused to air it, allegedly because it was a smear job.

Well, it wasn't a smear job, and reportedly the History Channel pulled out because the Kennedys put pressure on them. But it also wasn't the great American epic that you would expect -- its stately beginning and...

4.0 out of 5 stars Breaking through the Teflon coating, 23 April 2011
This review is from: The Kennedys [DVD] (DVD)
Slickly made mini series with attention to period detail. Greg Kinnear stands out as uncannily like JFK and Tom Wilkinson is excellent as always as Joe Kennedy. The Cuban Missile Crisis makes for very interesting viewing bearing in mind just how close the world came to nuclear conflict. Barry Pepper as Robert Kennedy does not resemble his subject as closely but does remind you of what the world lost when he was assassinated-probably the 'best' of the Kennedys'. It is no surprise that the 'family' blocked much of its transmission in the States for nothing is spared in the account of Joe's money grubbing, double dealing and womanising. There would have been no Kennedy dynasty without his craving for power through his sons political careers and you feel sympathetic for both Jack and Bobby to have such an autocratic parent. The 'pill popping' and 'drug injecting' for both JFK and the First Lady are quite shocking, as is just how disabled the supposedly 'young and virile' President was. America's 'Royalty' are shown warts and all and the end result is entertaining. For real insight however you really need to watch some of the excellent documentaries to be seen, in particular one about Edward Kennedy and Chappaquiddick which is riveting stuff and paints a far blacker portrait of this family than any dramatisation could do.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Drama, 29 April 2011
This review is from: The Kennedys [DVD] (DVD)
This tv mini-series was dropped by the History Channel in the US because apparently it didn't fit their "brand", what a load of bull. Having watched the History Channel recently the shows are rather low-brow with garbage like Swamp People and IRT and could do with more excellent dramas like this. Fair enough this isn't history, its a drama and what a drama it is at that. The performances are excellent especially Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper as Jack and Bobby. While the Kennedys come off slightly bad looking it must be remembered that they were only human and as humans made mistakes. In conclusion this mini-series is an excellent must watch drama and must be seen because it is truely an excellent piece of drama.

A very good series that shows the trials and errors of the Kennedy dynasty. The downfalls of having an overbearing, pushy father and behind the scenes of politics as the world was on the brink of nuclear destruction during the Cuban crisis. A well told story and a must for today's politicians. A copy should be sent to Putin.

I really enjoyed this series. although it included 'warts and all' it was still an excellent telling of the Kennedy family saga. I particularly enjoyed the telling of how involved Joseph Kennedy with his sons and how he used his connections.

Anything to do with the Kennedys I am interested, and this DVD is great, it covers such a lot about them all and I watched it several

times and never get bored with it. The acting was spot on and at times you were unaware it wasn't really the kennedys.

Would recommend to anyone interested in this family.
