This 8 album set starts off with Birth and Rebirth which features Anthony Braxton on alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, sopranino saxophone and clarinet along with on Max Roach drums which sets a high standard of improvisation the creativity thta is amply maintained accross the other 7 albums. Titled "Anthony Braxton - The Complete Remastered Recordings on Black Saint & Soul Note [Box set]" one might be forgiven for imagining that this represents either a comprhensive rundown of Braxtons career or at least a given period in his career. Neither of these thing is realy true although it does offer a big chunk of late 70s and through the 1980s, ending this collection of albums with Composition No. 173 whose players are described as Anthony Braxton - for 4 actors, 14 instrumentalists, constructed environment and video projections. The problem, if you can call it a problem, is that he has recorded over 100 albums the most recent of which Beyond Quantum was in 2008. The range is Braxtons work is mindboggling as is his music, always pushing the boundries and trying to move forward. He has recently been made Professor of Music at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, teaching music composition, music history, and improvisation. This is a true measure for the creativity of this brilliant musician, composer and innovator. These albums will keep you listening and stretch your ears a bit.
