5.0 out of 5 stars A spiritual journey through life; and a quest for meaning.
This is a wonderfully evocative book, based around the true tenure of the minister of the Church sent to the islands of St Kilda, Neil MacKenzie and his wife, in 1830. From then, until the book ends in 1844, we read of the lives of not only MacKenzie and his spiritual quest, but his wife and her own quest, and we catch glimpses of the lives of those who have for...

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting
I bought this book because I was interested in the life of the people of St Kilda. I have previously read the book, St Kilda. I was not disappointed. It is a well researched book with a vast amount of information, and I enjoyed it for that reason. I can see the hovels where the people lived, I can almost fell the stench! However, on a down note, I believe the author...

this bok was a great disappointment.I was looking forward to learning about the island of st kilda, but it seems tge writter was more interested in trying to write a romanctic story. it was badly constructed and over sanctimonious in places.. i cannot recommend it.

I read this book recently and ordered a copy as a gift.

Every Scot should know about St Kilda and this is an
atmospheric book to start the journey.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheerless Sabbaths in the manse., 30 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Island of Wings (Paperback)
Pastor goes to remote island. Very litlle happens for a really long time.
The islanders with little else to subsist on catch and eat puffins hence presumably the title.
Pastor eventually leaves island and does not join the wee free secession from the Church of Scotland.Endless wet windy Sabbaths in a cheereless Presbyterian manse ? If you fancy experiencing those then this is the book for you

Possibly the worst book I have ever had the misfortune to read. Boring, inconsistent and completely lacking any interesting or convincing story.
