I've been a fan of Stefan Grossman for longer than I care to remember, and learned a lot of what I know about guitarplaying from his records and books. I jumped at the chance of having a CD of "HOt Dogs" which was in my LP collection 30 years ago. And It's great to hear it again - I love especially the arrangements of "Hot Dogs/Cincinnati Flow Rag/New York City Rag" and "Candy Man" for guitar and tuba - and also the slide guitar piece "Vestapol". However -Stefan is a great guitarist and a good singer - but a very mediocre songwriter, if "Those Pleasant Days" is anything to go by. There is nothing of the ragtime guitar hero here - only rather uninteresting ballads with hippy lyrics. These haven't stood the test of time very well. So all in all - 5 stars for "Hot Dogs", but having listened to "Those Pleasant Days" once, I think in future I'll be flicking straight to track 12.
