The book is a fantastic and realistic scenario into the lives of the solders who fought in this bloody mess of a war .

A very interesting and at times moving account of the lives of soldiers during the Great War

Good to hear from the men who actually went through the War, some survived, some did not. It made me appreciate just what they went through and yet some retained their sense of humanity and humour. Not enough was done when the war was over to help the men back into civilian life but thank goodness that has changed and is changing.

The voices from the past are captured so well in Richard Van Emden's book. The brave soldier's who participated in the Great War speak so clearly of their feelings and their fears in this book and is a must read for everyone interested in this dark period.

If you have any interest in the first world war then this is in my view a book to read, the insight into the condition that those men and boys found where appalling but that is war.

It just amazing and quite humbling sometimes to see it through their eyes. A moving insight into a terrible war.

G ives a meaningful human insight into the war, instead of the usual journalistic reporting of events.
