This is one beautiful piece of kit. The display is crisp, ultra sharp and photographs are breathtakingly real. Its fast a very intuitive - no need for instructions, just pick it and use it. 2.0 out of 5 stars Frustratingly flawed and with basic functions missing - inexcusable at this price

We have added one star to the original score as later versions of iTunes have allowed us to transfer pictures.

However, here are some further thoughts based on more use.

Great tablet. I haven't been off it since I bought it a couple of weeks ago and am discovering new possibilities all the time. The flaws are that it doesn't have a sim card slot but you can buy a camera connection kit easily and cheaply. Picture quality and web browsing excellent. Email great too. Not great for writing documents need your old computer or laptop for this. Can edit pictures and video with apps. It is gorgeous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really pleased, 28 Jan 2012

Love my iPad. Bought it to take on hiliday. So functional. My partner watched films on the flight. Used the free wifi in the hotel to keep in touch with my son for free. Only draw back is the lack of flash but that doesn't stop it being a great little product.

4.0 out of 5 stars iPad 2 White, 8 Feb 2012

I bought the iPad 2 thinking I would take photos on my iPhone and bump them over to the iPad and then be able to show people at work. It took me a while to set this up but it does work and photos look good on the iPad and are much larger than on the iPhone, which is great for my line of work (film). Trying to find all the relevant Apps to download is tiresome however. I need an hour with someone who knows what they are doing but I haven't been able to get to an Apple shop. I do like the way that the iPad updates automatically if I add a new App to my iPhone, now I have set that up. Films look good on the iPad 2 as the screen resolution and colours, and size of screen are good, but working out how to hook it up to a 3D TV monitor is proving difficult - I have the right connecting cable but I can't get the picture on the TV from the iPad2 - sound comes through fine. It may be a problem with the TV however. Browsing the internet on the iPad2 over a WiFi connection is great, I prefer to use my iPad2 to my laptop. Sending emails is also easy and quick if there is a good WiFi connection. The iPad2 is a good size and I have a sturdy faux leather magnetic cover/stand for it that I love TeckNet® iPad 2 Premium Folio Case / Cover and Flip Stand For Apple iPad 2, With Magnetic Sleep Wake Sensor Feature - Brown- much better than the lightweight coloured ones you can get. I am sure I can get a lot more out of the iPad2 with a little guidance.

We have added one star to the original score as later versions of iTunes have allowed us to transfer pictures.

However, here are some further thoughts based on more use.

Battery life - not particularly bad, but not brilliant either, however it will discharge itself completely if left for a couple of days without being used, not sure if this is usual. I believe there is no 'off' switch so it must be on standby most of the time.

This seems to get more use by our ten year old son than anyone, and mostly to play with rather than anything else - taking those pictures with weird effects and so forth - and getting clips from YouTube.

We frankly have found the laptop to be the preference almost every time, which bears out the point one commentator made about us being more attuned to the Windows type product. We will say we agree with him, the iPad for us has reverted to being nothing more than a novelty toy. If you are considering buying it, work out whether you want it because it has what you need, or if you want it because of other reasons. For us, who perhaps thought it would basically replace a laptop, it didn't fulfill that purpose, and was an expensive purchase considering what it is now used for.

Please read that last paragraph carefully if you are going to comment on this review; it says 'for us' and in the review further down it says 'in our opinion'. Our review gives our thoughts on this, please do not insult us like some did in their comments. Try and help people decide whether they want this objectively.

*Original review*

Bought this for my wife, after having considered the Android / Galaxy alternatives.

It is a neat, well packaged and 'cool' piece of equipment, of that there is no doubt, however after a few days use I am getting ready to throw this against the wall.

Do you like photos? If you do, unless you accept having to use iTunes you will have to pay extra for the pleasure of what even the most basic computers and even cellphones do these days. For the last two days, I have been trying to import photos for the wife from our PC. You would have thought that the tried, tested, and very easy to use concept of drag and drop would be applied here. Or copy and paste. Maybe even a simple 'which photos would you like to upload' screen. Nope, if like me you think that having stumped up a lot of cash in the first place it is a bit of a liberty to have to pay extra for a photo management (not editor, like Photoshop) program, then you have to try and use iTunes.

Forget watching any flash based video clips, they don't work. BBC fans, go elsewhere.

The auto spell checker is intrusive and a pain - if you choose not to accept it's suggestion, it will still change it to the suggestion even if you touch on the 'X' - assuming that the screen definition is such that it is big enough to individually put your finger on. Of course, if it isn't, you will have to either delete the word, adjust the resolution then retype and try to correct, or accept the bad correction, adjust the resolution then delete it and try again. Did I mention that it doesn't accept your version even if you tell it to though? Our spell checker will have to stay off.

The 'keyboard' lacks arrow keys. This makes editing a pain, as you have to roll your finger around till a bubble appears then try to gingerly make the cursor go where you want. As you take your finger away it senses the movement and moves the cursor, so you have to start again. Arghhh!

I used to be heavily critical of Windows and Microsoft, but this has opened my eyes. Windows started with some frustrating features and quirks, but has clearly evolved keeping some of the simpler more intuitive parts, and includes all the basic stuff you could ever want. I can fully understand now all those people who 'jailbreak' their iPads; the fact that you have paid a significant sum for a piece of kit that promises so much but has glaring holes in its repertoire and some incredibly stupid quirks of functionaly really does show how this item is a triumph of chic over logic.
